old norseman plane crash

On July 11, 2009, at approximately 12:45pm, Alaska State Troopers were notified by Civil Air Patrol that an aircraft had crashed just outside of the village of Akiachak. The aircraft (tail number N225BL) belonging to Renfro Alaska Adventure Services crashed into the trees outside of Akiachak just after departing Bethel for Tuluksak. The Pilot/Owner of the aircraft, Wade Renfro (age 40 of Bethel) and Travis Siekert (age 31 of Bethel) were the only occupants of the aircraft at the time of the incident and were not injured as a result of the crash. The FAA and the NTSB were notified of the incident. Alcohol is not reported to be a factor in this incident.

Re: old norseman plane crash

Ouch, that is a very sad sight. Glad the guys were ok. Bad luck ? not to be on the water for touchdown. For me, flying in the bush of Canada with floats gives me a little more comfort than wheels, but what do I know. Hope I never have to find out.

Re: old norseman plane crash

I am not sure, but I think I have pics of this airplane on the Missouri River in Montana. The gentleman had just purchased it back east somewhere and was headed to Alaska with it. It was on straight floats and the landing gear were in the back along with a bunch of other stuff. I can't seem to find the pictures now.

Sad deal, it is great nobody got hurt seriously.

Re: old norseman plane crash

I have an uncle that worked as an A&P and flew in Alaska back in the early 1950's. He showed me a photo of a batch of lumber being unloaded out of a Norseman that looked like enough to build a house (not a cabin!). Pretty awesome airplane in it's day- and today.

Re: old norseman plane crash

We attended the Norseman Float Plane festival in Red Lake, Ontario last Sunday and got a ride in a 1943 Norseman that is still flying for hire. For those that may be interested, there is a thread going on Nav Canada http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopi ... 25&t=55984 about the Norseman, and if you scroll down the thread there are pictures and even a video that was taken as the planes were taking off from the water to do a fly over. Neat old planes. There are still 4 working out of the Red Lake area. Steve

Re: old norseman plane crash

Very capable airplane- I believe they have a Pratt 1340 on the nose. I would guess that they're the equival;ent of an Otter, though somewhat squattier looking. I seem to recall reading that they were first produced in about 1935. It's "proof of concept" that there's some out there still working, over 70 years after they were introduced. Ditto for the DC-3.

Re: old norseman plane crash

Ya they are about equivelent to an otter minus the STOL capibility. They seem to have good crash survivablity I know of a few that went into the trees on floats and every time everyone walked away.

'On Step: The Kenmore Air Story' is a good read, with pictures and stories of flying Norsemen on floats (and Republic Seabees) onto maritime glaciers in Canada.

Wow, glad to hear they're okay. I knew Wade when I lived out in BET, he's a nice guy. Hopefully, the Norseman will fly again.

Re: old norseman plane crash

I am an absolute newbie to your great website/forum. I am just about the same age as the first Norseman, and although I don't fly full scale, I build and fly radio control, mostly on floats, mostly in Haliburton, ON Canada. I have a fascination with that old Norseman, N225L, and have a nice 1/8 scale flying model, which I'll post a picture of when I figure out how! The first picture I have of her was taken in British Columbia, in Canada in the mid '60s, just before she was picked up by her longest owner, Geiri Johnson. Geiri had her for about 25 years registered as CF-GUE, and she was the backbone of Northway Aviation, based in Manitoba, north of Gimli. He repainted her in the colours she still wears, even as that sad wreck. I really hope someone can and will rebuild her. She has been in one Canadian National Film Board film, and a rather bad Hollywood film called "Grey Owl". She has been the subject of a "matchbox" plastic model (1/72 scale) kit, and 2 flying model kits by Unionville Models in Canada. Mine is a Unionville kit. I missed getting a ride in her at Red Lake by a whisker, but I did get to fly my own up there. I have some video footage of her at Red Lake, and some more footage of her taking off right beside Geiri's house in Manitoba. Geiri wrote a book about his experiences flying off Lake Winnipeg and building his small air cargo/passenger business. It is called "My Compass Points North": I had the great pleasure of visiting with him for a couple of days in winter about 15 years ago.

Sure hope that's not the last chapter for N225L (AKA CF_GUE).

Re: old norseman plane crash

They are neat old work horses. I live in an area that still has a few around. We went to the Red Lake festival in 09 and took a ride in a Norseman, that a friend ended up buying last year. If you look in my photo gallery, there is a picture I took last winter of another one on skis that is owned by one of our flying club members. He uses it to make deliveries to the Northern Reserves, mining camps and some tourist work. Steve

Re: old norseman plane crash

There was a Norseman on floats featured in the 1991 movie " Lost in the Barrens 2- Curse of the Viking Grave". Had the tailnumber CF-SAP painted on her. The timeframe was kinda vague but I believe the movie was set back in the 1930's or 40's. Cool to see an authentic period canadian bushplane in the movie.

Re: old norseman plane crash

There is a lot of history still flying up here, pulling in a pay check. In float float season, Beavers, Otters, Beech 18's and the Norseman, are all part of the landscape. Steve
