Who can identify this one?

It looks like a cross between a Stinson L-5 and a PZL Wilga...sure makes people back then look small.

Yep, they definitely made them smaller back then...

That is a really cool collection. Nice find and thanks for sharing.

I really should get off my butt and digitize all the old slides/prints I've collected over the years from various people's collections.

Stinson L-13 AKA Convair L-13 & L-13A

Also converted as a "Husky"

Many had Lycoming radials
Australia built many as the Flying Doctor workhorse

That is a Consolidated Vultee L-13 with the horizontal opposed engine. A friend of mine owns one with the 300 hp Lycoming radial. I was in the hanger with it not an hour ago. It was designed by Stinson and apparently flies somewhat like a Stinson. Those barn door flaps also have 55 degrees of movement too. Slotted wing leading edge in front of the ailerons and somewhat slotted ailerons. Super stol for the military doing recon and hauling stretchers in the 40's

This is the 220 hp Franklin version. The L-13's were made in late 1940's to early 1950's. The aircraft was originally developed for Military Liaison .There were approximately 500 built -Mostly by Consolidated Valtee . They are certified with the Lyc. and Franklin -There's even a P&W 985 STC for crop dusting. At one time there were dozen or so in Fresno,CA. doing crop spraying. I know where one is located in Southern Calif. for sale -guy wants 30K ---- Me and Bill Berle looked at one several years ago. L-13 will haul the basketball team and pool table out of tennis court. Makes a Cessna 206 look small. Greenhouse windows all around --makes a great glider / banner tow machine.Wings and tail fold so you can tow it behind a jeep. Not fast maybe 90-100 mph . Slows to a walk on landing .

Re: Old photos of old birds from the good old days

You are correct in all respects Bill. The one up here is the one that Bud Davison wrote his article about. It is one heck of a bird. It was used weekend before last at the Elmendorf AFB air show as part of the crowd entertainment. It was parked with the flaps extended fully....talk about a pilot magnet.... One look at the barn doors hanging down and here they came with the questions. Interesting that this one is only a 3 place with room to place 2 stretchers stacked also.

I thought it looked like a Stinson of some sort. With the radial up front it would really resemble a cross between a Stinson and Wilga. Thats it...I want to add that one to my Logbook! \:D/

Here's a link to the article Bud Davison wrote. The bird in the pic is the L-13 that now lives at Merrill Field in Anchorage.

I really like that blue n' yellow T-crate's paint scheme. I'll have to remember that when I recover my fuselage - thanks, Zane!

Re: Old photos of old birds from the good old days

Most of these "little old planes" were quite slow by today's standards....but the alternatives were slower back 'then'.
Keep in mind this was before the Interstate freeway system of today, and travel by car consisted of winding :!: roads that went through LOTS of small to medium 'bergs' or 'townlets' that you had to slow to a crawl in, or you would get to visit the local 'Justice of the Peace' and have to 'buy' your way out of town......country roads were 2 lane and on winding roads 'no passing' zones were almost constant. To add to the problem, farm equipment/machinery at near walking pace was common in rural areas. Trucks were WAY under powered so on much of a incline/hill......and you can't safely pass on a hill......so near walking pace again. On the bright side, a lot of the trucking moved at night to avoid the 'busy' time and traffic that happened in the daytime.

Just sayn', life is better now!
