You can buy this doubler kit which gives an STC extending the inspection to 10 years/1500 hours. It costs 3K. The tailcone inspection takes about 20 hours of labor if I remember so almost a wash at 105/hr - my IAs shop rate. In 5 years his shop rate is likely more. Plus down time. I am likely to do it again in 2033.

You need to reread that Josh. It says right in the link you provided that even though the STC allowed for 10 year, the FAA helped clarify that the AD for 5 years takes precedence…

I'm not seeing that-- from the linked webpage:

"Thank you for your patience while we clarified the effects of AD2020-21-22. Though the STC for the Tail Cone Angle Kit (STC SA02522AK) allowed for an extended inspection time of 10yr/1500hr, the FAA helped clarify that AD2020-21-22 takes precedence with its required inspection of 5yr/500hr."

From the ICA for the STC:

"Limitations:
Currently there are no components of the McFarlane Aviation, LLC. Cessna tail cone reinforcement angle
splice Kit that have a time limited mandatory replacement. 2018-CE-060-AD: Cessna 180, 182, 185 Tail
Cone AD specifies inspection of this area of known crack propagation every 500 flight hours or 5 years,
whichever comes first. After installation of this STC kit, inspection will not be required until cumulating
500 flight hours or 5 years whichever comes first. After the initial inspection, inspections will be
required every 500 flight hours or 5 years whichever comes first."

Re: Optimum CG test, worth doing it!

Thanks for the information both David and Eric and my misunderstanding. I got some bad information about the modification. I will have to see if Mcfarlane will let me return it. The only reason I bought it was I thought it extended the time for the inspection to 10 years. My guess is that this was a statement made under the SB prior to the AD. I had my last inspection in 2018 and had no issues in the tailcone. Not sure why they have this tricky wording on their website. I didn't read it carefully.

Bill Duncan of Bushwheels fame developed & marketed the QMI reinforcement kit,
not long after the Cessna service bulletin came out.
He stated the 10 year / 1500 hour recurrent inspection interval in his paperwork,
which is where the confusion comes from,
because when the AD came out it contained the same every 500 hours / 5 years inspection requirement as the SB.
I dunno if Bill / QMI / McFarlane ever tried for an AMOC (alternate means of compliance) to that,
but in any event to the best of my knowledge they never got one.
