I've done that same thing, it's totally cool.

That island with the airstrip down the middle is Allen Island, it was for sale not too long ago. It's already divided into 25 lots, perfect place to start another air park!

What a great idea I'd have loved to have done that.

Very nice! I flew to Orcas last April and went to the top of Mt Constitution.

Re: Orcas fly and Mt bike ride.

So far, all of my trips through the San Juans has been via boat, from my 19' Sea Ray (The Ultimate Small Boat Adventure, only $15.95, Barnes & Noble, Amazon :)), through a chartered 34' Nordic Tug (our favorite) to a 36' Grand Banks. I learned "big boat" ops in a 37' Bayliner with twin diesels, but that meant a bit of relearning, since the other boats were single screw only--that transition is a bit like transitioning to a different airplane, learning the nuances of something different. We love the area, and we love boating in it. I'd never get Marilyn to fly the islands, but I'd love to do it myself. Of course, ideally that would be in a seaplane, because there are oodles of places throughout the islands to use one.

Can't find them now, or I'd offer to scan them for you, but somewhere I have maps of San Juan Lopez & Orcas Islands showing roads etc. I photocopied it out of a book I got at the library about exploring the SJ's via bike. They're pretty cool, and not your typical road map-- hand drawn, with interesting places noted.

Flying and riding, the two best combinations out there. I'm rezrider after all!

I couldn't properly post the URL on these last two, but click the link.

FWIW the book claimed that Lopez was the flattest island re bicycle riding, but I've been all over Lopez in a car and it's definitely not flat-- plenty of up and down on the roads. Haven't been around much on SJ other than down to Friday harbor from the airport and right around Roche Harbor resort, haven't been anywhere much on Orcas either other than between the airport & Eastsound.

Yes indeed, the only thing better is snowboarding, riding, and flying all in one day, did that a few times this year! Bikes and airplanes just go together, always have always will.

FWIW I also have a map of San Juan County, the only place I think I could have picked it up at is the "Visitor Welcome center" at the Friday harbor airport. Or maybe the "terminal" at Lopez. Shows all the main island's roads.

Roche Harbor is a great place to fly into also. It's a private strip but you are welcome to land and park as long as you pay the $10 fee for parking. It's a nice walk down to the marina where the big boys have toys. There's a decent eating establishment at foot of marina.
