over a 10,000 ft obstacle

New record for climb to 10,000ft. Kinda long take off for a stol but can't beat that climb rate.

Where did that take place?
Hope there wasn't much air traffic, not much see-and-avoid going on.
Early in the climb, it even looked like his eyes were closed!
But I guess he was just looking down at the instruments.

Really cool flight and record attempt ruined by a crappy video. Man that was terrible.
I don’t even know if they succeeded.

....and I really like cool music

Looks like this took place in Oxnard, just a bit NW of LA. I'd imagine some sort of block altitude took place being that close to the Bravo airspace, they're only 13nm from the 30nm mode C veil.

I agree that the vid could have been a bit better, but this kind of rhetoric really bums me out.

It takes so much time and effort to shoot, assemble, and post videos on the web. Good or bad, complaints about the "perceived" quality of free content is disheartening. I would suggest we all think about this before we sling the easy critizism. The web is full of "takers" these days. Not to be Polyanish, but perhaps we should promote the creation and sharing of this sort of stuff rather than swat it down.

Just my Sunday morning soapbox... Thanks for sharing the link Shortbuzz!

Cool. 80” MP...wow. Wonder how many runs it’s good for.

They've got a ways to go before they beat the F-15. Not sure if the music was any better in 1973.

They used to refuel those things in Grand Junction, CO back when I was working on my PPL there. I watched a couple of those full - burner unrestricted climbs. Rocked the whole valley, amazing horsepower!

The “Sky Crane” reached 3,000 meters (9,842.52 feet) in 1 minute, 38.2 seconds, and 9,000 meters (29,527.56 feet) in 7 minutes, 54 seconds.¹ (It climbed through 6,000 meters (19,686 feet) in 2 minutes, 58.9 seconds.²)

One of the pilots we worked with told me the Skycrane once beat an F-16 to 10,000.
