PA-22/20 project at Steve's

As some of you know, Brian and Steve at Steve's Aircraft have been working on my Pacer over the winter and spring. The project is nearing completion (just a few weeks out now) so I thought I would show off some of their work here. This is just a small sample of the photos that Brian has taken. He has over 300 photos of the project posted on his business' facebook page. A/C will be Daytona white (khaki) with a Bahama blue stripe and black interior. Brian and Steve recovered the wings and tail surfaces a few years ago so those are being left alone except for the addition of VG's.

A list of upgrades to my PA-22/20-160 :

2 Steve's Gascolators (already had one)
Crosswinds STOL cuff (previous mod)
Micro VG's
Steve's skylight (previous mod)
29" buffed Airhawks w/ Gar aero adapters
Cleveland wheels and single puck brakes (I'll need to uprgrade these later but better than the drums that were on there)
Cubcrafter's wingtips (previous mod)
Boxed in tail of a/c
reinforced landing gear and added refueling step
406 ELT
new interior (had this done right before I dropped off the a/c at Steve's)
Added shoulder harness mounting points for the rear seats
shoulder harness front (previous mod)
LED nav/strobe lights (previous mod)
Recovered fuselage Poly stits / blasted and powder coated the airframe
lightweight starter
rotating beacon
Maule fuel selector valve

I've been following along on Facebook. As a PA22/20 owner I'm jealous; that will be a very envied aircraft when it is done!

Cool project and nice Pacer. I miss having those two work on and mod my Pacer. Every time it went over, we did something different to it.

Thanks for sharing.

I"m not criticizing here in any way cause I know they know what they are doing.. but I gotta ask....29 11 10's on single puck brakes??? even Maule won't approve anything bigger than 8.50's on single puck.

That's stock pacer gear that's been modified with fueling steps, reinforcing brace for the streamline tube and some little curved transitions for the trailing edge fairing supports.

Stock, as in Univair, or is it the original narrow Piper?

Re: PA-22/20 project at Steve's

They are Univair conversion gear modified as per follow on 337 field approval originally done by Eddie Trimmer. The curved transition at the bottom is a little something I do to make them look a little better. Always thought they look unfinished with the squared of trailing edge.

The 337 approval also approves Cleveland 199-62A double puck wheels and brakes to be added when Bender as the funds to do so... Currently, the project is running over budget and I am trying my best to keep his cost down while keeping the quality of the build high. For instance, I am not going to install the fabric trim panels in the interior, the arm rest or any Items that can be added at any time but are not a safety issue to the aircraft. That will keep the labor cost down a little but still have a good flying airplane when done. Shooting for the first week of June to fly. Crossing fingers.

Brian.

Update. Bought Cleveland kit 199-62A (six bolt double pucks) for the project. Also secured a hangar yesterday. The plane should be done in a couple of weeks.

And....I was trying to keep up with Brian and Steve. Kind of like secretly competing with them as a way to get my project done in a timely manner. Would take a few minutes every evening to check Steve's Aircraft face book page.... They're cutting out tubing....I'm installing tubing.... Bri's modifying the Univair gear....I'm fitting Cub gear. Bri posts a pic of the fuselage wearing paint....damn I'm loosing! Today discover the wings are a few years out of recover/paint.... Damn I'll never catch up. Maybe if I could find a set of wings while I rebuild mine....

Been cool to watch it progress on Facebook. I was hoping you were going to plan you trip to line up with the High Sierra Fly-in so I could check it out.

Re: PA-22/20 project at Steve's

It's a lot tougher to make it out west now that I'm living in Virginia. I'll be out there for the Tailhook convention in Reno in two weeks and luckily I'll be able to pick up the plane right after it's over. My back up plan was to come get it right before the High Sierra fly-in. Are you flying the Bearhawk down there?

Re: PA-22/20 project at Steve's

I remembered that you were moving east and it makes since to get the plane after your trip to Reno. Would have been nice to check out your plane, hope I get the chance sometime. My current plan is to fly the Bearhawk down to HSF and I'm hoping the current owner will come with me. Post up your plan when you are headed east with the plane, I might be making a trip to S. Utah in September.
