PAPG Petersburg AK trip

Made a run up to PAPG Petersburg AK and wanted to pass along a little info and pics if you have never been there before. I'll keep this short.

Fueled up in PAKT Ketchikan and flew NW up Clarence Strait past Meyers Chuck floatbase, hung a right Northbound in to Stikine Strait, past Wrangell, and over Farm Island so I could get a view of the Le Conte Glacier. Clouds blocked most of my view, but still worth sharing a pic of it.

Ok, time to land. Here is a wide view final of rwy 23. Hugh runway, nice and flat. That gap in the hills at 1:00 is the Duncan Creek Portage that leads to Duncan Canal.

Why stop here you ask? If you look in this next pic on the right side, along the road, you can see the post office with the blue roof. Next to that is a good size grocery store and pizza place. It is a easy 2500 ft walk up the road to resupply on your journey. You want to carry food and drink on your trip, but not so much that you don't have room for other stuff, right guys?

Take the stairs down to the man-gate and walk up the street to the Alaska Airline terminal for bathrooms. Don't walk toward the terminal on the ramp side of the fence or the blue shirts with charge out with guns drawn ( its a SIDA, like at all airline airports). Walk another 100 ft to the Temsco Helicopters building and talk to the office lady or "Wally" about getting fuel. They will take good care of you. Then up the road past the hwy maintenance building, post office, and to the store.

You can take a taxi downtown ( a little farther than I wanted to walk ) for a hotel and restaurant food if you like also. Everything you need is in a 5 block area. It was the high point of the seafood harvest so it was busy. We stayed at the Tides Inn on 1st street, and walked to all meals and bars, and the hardware store. The Scandia House is also a very nice to stay if you like the nicer places. Walk a few more block and check out the docks and the "Sons on Norway Hall". Its like a barn built on pilings and is neat to see. Of course, you better grab a brew at Keto's Kave bar. Remember, only 5 blocks to crawl back to the hotel.

Time to go. I took a few pics of PAWG Wrangell on the way out in case you guys wanted to see that place also.

Re: PAPG Petersburg AK trip

Obxbushpilot: Lucky you! I really like Ketchikan. Make sure you drive North up the Tongass Hwy, past Ward Cove to see Totem Bite Park and check out the cedar long house and hand carved totem poles. Then continue North until to road ends and check out the park. Great trails.

As for the wx in Petersburg... #-o for me at least, one of the most consistently tough places to get in to IFR. The scud hangs out in the bowl that the town sits in. Many times the narrow channel near "Papkeys Landing" ( spelling ?) up to Scow Bay is plugged up. It would be hard to turn around in there in that situation. I prefer to follow Airway T266 from Wrangell in to Petersburg because I am not that familiar with the area when I go VFR in the winter. This will also give you a nice view of the icebergs in the water that calf off the glacier.

Z, yeah it was a good trip. A really clean town. Power went out for about an hour while I was there. Ka-boom, then all the lights went dark. Locals said last time this happened it was a 50K volt fried eagle. All the shop owners came out and stood in front on their stores and chatted with people. I was kind of sorry when the lights went back on.

Thanks CamTom12, I wish I had time to fish while I was there. The fishing fleet was really bringing in a big haul. I'd say one out of every 8 people walking around downtown had on rubber boots because they were just off a boat and were gathering "cleaning supplies" Image and heading back out for more. Yeah, right...cleaning supplies.

8GCBC, Not enough to get to Hawaii  There is a little deli on the main street in town that sells all kinds of smoked/dried/canned fish products. I had the best smoked salmon dip of my life while I waited for my sandwich. Sorry, I didn't bring you any, but I was thinking about you. :^o Really, I was.
