Payette, Idaho Airport

Folks,

Just got a note from Jerry Cain in Montana:

This just came from the Idaho Aviation Association. Go to this website

http://payette.govoffice.com ,

then click on Mayor Henderson’s Corner on the left side just under the Home tab which will open up to show Polling Place and What’s New. Click on Polling Place. There are two polls the second of which is How important is Payette’s city airport? Click on Very and then click on Vote. You will then see the current results.

Whether or not you will ever go there, do this to help preserve one more airport. It will take you less than 30 seconds.

Forward this to any other appropriate aviation lists.

Thanks.
Jerry Cain

I voted, did you??

Great results 95%+
Our local paper had a similar poll and for KHQM we were 70+% infavor of fixing up and keeping the airport where it is, and some 18% for moving it. The rest were for closing.

Marc,

Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous
But to an even greater degree than the sea,
it is terribly unforgiving of any
carelessness, incapacity, or neglect.

Grab your golf clubs and fly into Payette. The runway goes right through a golf course. Not a backcountry strip but if you are a golfer...

Good point. Apparently, the golf course folks want to do away with the airport to build a housing development.

Maybe a lot of golfers flying in would make them think.

Or not.

In any case, please go there and vote.

Its all in the marketing of the town or Golf course. If you have a good reason to fly there, you will. Pilots usually are good customers and a good resaurant and cheap gas and easy access to the clubhouse and that could be the next great fly-in Golf course.

Hello,

I am a Payette county researcher, and I have been asked to research the history of the Payette airport by several private parties who are very opposed to seeing it closed.

My internet research led me to this forum. I went to see the poll posted by Mayor Henderson, but it has been removed. Thank you to the gentleman who said there was a 95+ in favor of. Any idea how many voted?

For those of you interested, here is a link to a newspaper story explaining what some people with money would like to see happen to the airport.
http://www.argusobserver.com/articles/2 ... news02.txt

The proposal will be pitched at an upcoming city council meeting. I am sure any information I find will be used by those opposing the buyout. I'm afraid the city will only see $$$ signs and will accept the offer. If any of you are familiar with the Payette airport and would like to offer letters of support, I know many locals would greatly appreciate it. I would appreciate a copy as well.

Thank you for your time.

Yup, contact AOPA. Also, find out if the Airport has an ASN volunteer (Airport Support Network). If not, then it sounds like a local pilot needs to fill the spot so AOPA has a contact person and a set of eyes and ears on the ground.

Good luck. The last thing we all want to see is another airport closed.

Thanks to those of you who left replies and e-mailed me personally. Every little bit helps further the cause.

At the suggestion, I did send an e-mail to the AOPA this evening. I did a search and there is an article on the website about helping to save the airport several years ago, but since I am not a paying member, I could not read it. If any of you are members, could you look up the story and copy it for me?

I will follow up every lead and I do so appreciate everyone's imput.

I have a meeting next Thursday with the historical society and will present all my information obtained thus far.

Thanks again,
Patty

From AOPA website:

Idaho. Payette: Endangered Payette Airport was saved from closure after the Idaho Aeronautics Division aroused civic pride by noting that the airport dated to 1929 and was the first ever registered with the state. The City of Payette also established an airport commission to maintain and improve the facility.
