Tonight I received my Zaon MRX any one using one of these? It appears to be pretty magical if it does what they say. I guess I will see tomorrow. I guess another set of eyes sort of speak cant be all bad. Especially in that smog filled valley over the hill.

Zaon MRX? Is that like a Yamamoto Cannon from Skyblazers? Is it mounted along the spine of your aircraft, takes 90 seconds to charge, and disintegrates anything in it's path?

Cool way to make a landing strip! 8)

There is always somebody who is going to get technical, post the correct answer, and break up a perfectly good nonsense thread!

I got into an argument with some of the Supercub.org guys about this topic a while ago.

If it's what you're talking about, I think they are cool and can be quite useful. I'd like to have one.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Zane, this unit will recognize interrogations from TCAS, Skywatch, Military, and Mode S. It also has a built in altimeter it uses. So if your friendly 777 is seeing traffic that is shadowed from ground based radar it will interrogate that unit. The manual says if it displays there is traffic, and center doesnt see it trust it there is traffic.

O.K., I got it wrong the first time. It's actually called a 'Pilot Confusion Augmentation System'...

I clicked over & read that thread thru, Zane. It was going on last Sept, don't know how but I guess I missed that one.
I like the idea of nordo op's, and will defend our right to them-- but I figure a com radio is a pretty good thing to have so you can at least monitor what other pilots SAY they're up to. My instructor was an IFR kinda guy, so I got plenty of radio action when I was getting my private ticket, and I admit that I'm alot more comfortable using the radio around busy airports than not. When I do fly a nordo airplane I notice that I'm alot more vigilant. But unfortunately nobody else around me is.
Personally I don't feel any desire or need for a PCAS,TCAS, or any other kind of AS. ( at least not the kind with a single S)
I'm kinda afraid that the natural reaction when that thing buzzes or whatever will be to look at it to see where it sez the traffic is-- when you should be eyeballing your surroundings. That's fine if you have a first officer to help, but as for me I prefer the good old mark one eyeball.
But if you like it, go for it. Just don't forget to keep the eyes on a swivel & outside the airplane where they belong.

I've got to admit, I'm becoming a TCAS cripple. You'd be amazed at how many planes are out there that you just can't see, even though you have a screen telling you where they are. Most of the time you do find your traffic with it but, depending on flight conditions, some you just never find even though they are less than a mile away. TCAS is a great tool, and if PCAS works, USE IT!

I've been using a Monroy ATD-300 for about three years now. Although it's no TCAS system, it does alert you to traffic and does (usually) give you a relative altitude readout, so you know whether to look above or below the horizon. It's range is usually understated, so it has to show 1-2 miles before I have a prayer of acquiring the intruder.

It's main strength is that it WILL alert to any transponder reply within the nominal range, and that will tell you to GET YOUR HEAD UP NOW! I wouldn't fly anything without one anymore. My life is worth WAY more than $650.

I did have some difficulty getting it to work properly and had to get another external transponder antenna to get reasonable alerting. It also required several months of learning it's responses before I could extract the most from it. When I was with flight following and could get a controller traffic alert and after visually acquiring that traffic, I was pleasantly surprised at how accurate it was (except for range, which was generally about 30-40 % more than indicated).

I guess I'd rather have it that way rather than the other way around! :P
