I remember when Mt. St. Helens blew in Washington state. We weren't directly downwind, about 200 miles downwind and then 100 miles off to the side, but we still got quite a bit of ash. It looked like snow. It smelled like rock dust at a crusher. It felt like Ajax cleanser. It really wreaked havoc on engines and equipment. I would prefer to never repeat the experience.

Re: Photos of Eyjafjallajokull

I had a flight into Cairo on Sunday, out today. When we were in line at the hotel all dressed up in our anti-gravity suits we had about half a dozen people come up and ask us who we flew for and could they go with us. Had to turn them down, none of them wanted to go to Saudi Arabia anyway!
One lady was part of a large group from D.C., she was already 4 days late and was looking at possibly another 8 days before there was a seat to JFK. A few of her group had made it to Istanbul and got seats on Delta only to be told that because of the long re-route they would have to leave their bags behind.
Listening to all the various stories it seems that none of the airlines are coordinating with each other, aircraft were sitting on the ground while I think they could have been flying to Madrid or Rome or Barcelona. At least let the people from Europe hang around there and possibly get a train or bus home.
