Picabo, ID Lunch Run - 11/30/2013

In case anyone is looking for a reason to go fly tomorrow, we are going to make a run to Picabo for lunch tomorrow. Planning on leaving OGD around 0900 and arrive there by 1100. Planning on checking out the conditions of Laidlaw Corrals and Bear Trap since we are in the neighborhood. If anyone is in the area, we will be on 122.75 or 123.45.

FYI, I called and talked to the owner. He says the strip is in great shape and to come on up!

Yup. Thanks. Forecasting for a few scattered showers with higher ceilings until later in the day for the Picabo area. Nicer south of there. Forecast for Burley and Northern Utah is nice all day with light winds.

Thanks, will do!

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Sounds fun, never been to Picabo but have been wanting to get out there and was looking for a reason to fly. I'm planning on leaving KMAN a little before 10am in the PA-22, hope to see you there.

They have sandwiches, chili, and all of the usual upper class convenience store items.........including a fly shop. If that doesn't suit you the other option is to jump over the hills to the west and go to the restaurant at Magic Reservoir. And another 15 miles from there is Fairfield and the Wrangler across the street.

Hey Scott! See you there. I'll be with a 182. My tail is 40Z, his is 98N.

Joe, come on over!

Like G3 said, if we want a bit more of a selection, we can run over to Magic (been years since I've been there. I guess it's still open?) or we can fly over to Fairfield.

The wx is looking good. Some lower ceilings around TWF, but still solid VFR. Light winds. Should be a good day for a little outing.

I was en-route from Idaho Falls to Elko today and heard the Picabo traffic. Even thought about asking if you were BCPer's. Had to get my sons home though so didn't have the time; Sounded like you were having fun! I landed a Beartrap for a relief stop so I wasn't that far out.

Nice to meet you guys over there today! Appreciated the short meet and greet, sorry I had to cut it short. Next time I might be able to play for a while.
Saw you guys leaving the house after fueling, taking care of mom so I couldn't run up and say hello, next time on that too.

Nice to meet you guys, thanks for the invite. Added a new breakfast/lunch spot to my list, great burgers. Pretty misty heading west on the way home, was just starting to drizzle when I got back. Hope you guys had good weather heading back to Utah.

By the way, out of curiosity asked the guy at the register if the autofuel was ethanol free, he said it did contain ethanol now unfortunately.

Re: Picabo, ID Lunch Run - 11/30/2013

What a great day of family, friends, and flying! We launched around 9:20am as a flight of two since a disabled aircraft had 2 of OGD's runways momentarily closed. First time I had done that and kind of fun. The air was smooth and we had light winds on the way up. About 20 minutes out from Picabo, Scott came up on freq. We couldn't have timed that any better as he was about the same distance out. I checked out the strip, then came around to land, followed shortly by Carey and Scott.

What a cool place! The store is kind of a one stop shop. It's the convenience store, resturaunt, grocery store, and post office. The food was great and we were pleasantly surprised. I'm just trying to figure out why it took me so long to discover this place! G3 showed up with his mom in his 180 and he had a friend from Nampa in tow in his 180. All in all, we had 5 aircraft there. Not bad for a spontaneous lunch run!

After lunch, we ran over to Bear Trap and Laidlaw Corrals to check the conditions out, then over to Gooding to fuel up. Then it was time to head home with a nice 10-15 knot tailwind. It was a beautiful flight back to sunny skies in northern Utah. All in all, a great day! The weather cooperated and we had sun for most of it.

Mike, sorry we missed you!

George, no problem. I'm glad we got to meet and look forward to the next time. I'm glad you came up. Best of luck with your mom.

Scott, thanks for coming over. It was great to meet you. Next time I hope your family can come too and we can meet them as well.

Here are a handful of pics from today.

An old abandoned CAA intermediate airstrip called Locomotive Springs in Northern Utah. Look closely and you can still see the circle on the ground with short lines coming out of it. I believe that these indicated the direction of the airways and associated beams that were broadcasted. I'd like to go check this place out sometime.

Re: Picabo, ID Lunch Run - 11/30/2013

A great trip report on one of our Idaho gems, I've been hitting it for over 30 years and it's great to see others appreciating it. An hour away for me, thought about it but didn't get the plane out of the shop until late afternoon. Great pics of the crew, complete with airborne stuffed animals!

Carey, right around the corner maybe 20 miles, is another great grass strip, with (I think, don't quote me, it's been a few years) a cafe within walking distance. If it's still open it wouldn't be as convenient as Picabo though.

I've been to Carey, but never ventured off the strip. I've wondered if there was a place to eat and have wanted to explore it. The last time I was there, they had a white station wagon for a courtesy car. Next spring I hope to check it out. Sorry you couldn't make it. Next time!
