I heard from a Grant station manager that they will be having a ground school for Bethel based Pilots soon.

Word is that the Grant class is for six C-207 pilots for the class; they have three and need another three. The flying is great here, notwithstanding Gump's lack of affection for Bethel.

"Paris on the Kuskokwim." I love it! But given the high population of Albanian and Korean taxi drivers in Bethel maybe it would be more appropriate to call it "Tirana [or Seoul] on the Kuskokwim".

The flying here sure is fun. Lots of great people, both Gussick (sp?) and native.

Southern Air and Kallita are both hiring FOs' for the 747 classic and -400 FYI. Just sayin'

I prefer to think of it as "when in Rome . . ." I don't have a Tundra Bunny, as several of my fellow pilots do, so I haven't gone entirely native. But I do enjoy salmon strips whenever I can get good ones.

But come January, when it's -30 and I'm up on the wing fueling the plane so I can take 1200 pounds of soda pop to a slippery runway on a windy day I might be singing a different tune!

Nothing's slippery when it's -30. Wait till April when it's 31 above and spitting gunk at ya, and there's standing water on top of the ice runways. It's an E ticket ride!!!!!!

Is it just me or is the federal pay scale way out of sync with the times. I mean that just the pay not including the benefits and retirement.

Read the Job description and basic qualifications.....it's a TEST PILOT job. What sort of salary do you suppose Boeing pays for a test pilot?

Trust me, not many federally employed pilots draw that kind of salary.

Government jobs should always pay less than a comparable job in the private sector. Besides the extra security and generally better retirement. The best and brightest should be in the private sector producing not in the government milking. Sadly thats not the way it is any more.

Actually, my bad. The position is as the section MANAGER of certification flight test. So, not only a test pilot (graduation from a test pilot training program required), but management responsibilities for the Division. And, when Boeing or?? wants an airplane certificated, guess who is going to oversee and approve that process? If I were the manufacturers, I'd want a REALLY good person in this job, and paid well.

I'd bet even with retirement benefits (there is no more civil service, by the way-all government retirement programs are essentially a 401K or 403 b or...) the person who takes this job won't be making half what his or her counterpart in the private sector will be making.

Sounds like a shitty job to me, in any case....lots of flight qualifications, but not much flying...
