Re: Pilot Job in Alaska

Many moons ago I spent a summer in Galena. I was part of a BLM firefighting squad that utilized a Huey Helicopter flying out of Galena. Galena is an indian village on the banks of the Yukon River out in the middle of the Alaskan bush. It has a Air Force runway that had two Phantom fighters based there back then. Saw a firefighting B-25 make a belly landing when I was there. Ah,...memories...

I used to go to Galena all the time when I was stationed at Elmendorf for NORAD alerts. I'd say I probably have a total of 6 months time there, typically a couple weeks at a time. Longest trip was about 2 months.

Agree about the chow hall. Not bad and they were always very accommodating. Been since spring 2008 that I was there.

Watch out for the one arm bandit in the bar, he gets angry after a few drinks! And no, it's not a slot machine, but a native with one arm.

I though the air base was completely decommissioned? Still a nice little town. Easy flying distance from Fairbanks.

Re: Pilot Job in Alaska

Was just there twice earlier this month while visiting M6RV6 in Nulato...and the funny thing is I had coffee with the pilot currently holding this position...wonder if they're adding a new pilot or if Darren is going else where?? Anyhow, they have a heck of a nice cub...saw it parked on the narrow inlet east of the runway.
