Re: PITEPS Wanted: SE Utah

I was at Hidden Splendor, Mex. Mtn., Dirty Devil, Happy Canyon, and Mineral last weekend and thought they were all in good condition.
Also stopped at the Chevron in Green River for fuel and soft serve.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Gary, do you mean the truckstop on the west side of town? If so where did you land? Looking at Google maps I don't see much.

Hey Steve,

Please update Shortfield when you get back. I'll be headed down in two weeks. Planning on spending the night at Mexican Mt and maybe hiking down to the slot canyon at Hidden Splendor.

Have a great trip!

Re: PITEPS Wanted: SE Utah

Will do, Grasstrippilot. My neighbor and I will be taking his Bearhawk. This is a trial run for his new Dynon. We plan to zig zag our way from Huntington to Mac Mesa, then do the same back to Boulder and spend the night there. On Tuesday we will head north to Hidden Splendor, Huntington and back to Morgan. I'll be taking some video and will post some once I get it edited.

Re: PITEPS Wanted: SE Utah

Good morning Marty
Yes, it is west of town. On a road that goes from the town to the freeway. There are 2 stations there, one on each side of the road. I chose the one on the south side of the road. Looks like an abandoned strip behind it and running east from the station.back towards town. It has a jog in it. I landed on the eastern half and taxied to the station.

That was pretty cool. Should have taken a picture next to a Peterbilt. I did see that but thought nah. Looking again I see a circle mid way that might have been for a windsock. Did it used to be a real airport back in the day?

Or you can land just south of the Super 8 motel on the east end of town and have a gas station and a motel. The Idaho guys like that old road/runway.

My buddy and I are looking at doing the slot at happy canyon this weekend, just talked to Steve on the phone.
We are going to try it from the dirty devil strip and access the slot from that old road/track using mountain bikes if it's ridable then stash the bikes and hike the rest.
7 miles of sandy wash hike doesn't sound like much fun.
I'll let you know what we find.

Re: PITEPS Wanted: SE Utah

Rezrider,

Let me know how the happy slot access by mountain bike from dirty devil works out! Ive studied that option a fee times but have yet to try it. The hike from happy canyon down the wash to the narrows is too long to be able to enjoy them unless you bring a backpack and do an overnighter. Airdrop a bundle of wood or two by the start of the slot and enjoy a nice fire. If you want to relax in 4 camp chairs near the narrows pm me and I will tell you where they are stashed!

I'm guessing you won't get far at all but I'd also love to hear how you make out.
It sure doesn't seem like that hike to the opening of Happy would be 7 miles round trip… We motorcycled in from Poison Spring Canyon and rode as far as we could on that old 2 track on the South side of the river. We ditched the bikes and hiked the rest of the way and we were 8.5 miles round trip. It sure looked to me like the airstrip was much closer. You will love it if this is your first time. Try to be in the slot around high noon if you want the best photos. And please do a write up with photies [-o<

Yes please let us know how it goes and what you find as far as water levels, etc. in the slot. Really looking forward to checking the area out.

Re: PITEPS Wanted: SE Utah

I had a neighbor stop by last night, and he showed me some pictures of what would seem to be the same place or someplace a whole lot like it. He and his better half had just gotten back from a trip down there. The term "the slot" was mentioned I believe anyway. He had some high def vid on his IPAD that really showed what a cool scene those canyons are, yeah keep us posted on how to access this area via our flying machines. I sure as hell am not going to drive down there! I also have a way of carrying my mountain bike in the plane to make getting there work.

I heard you need a permit from the park system, and the permit is based on a lottery system? That sounds like a complication.

From the happy canyon strip it looks like 7 miles of wash EACH WAY to the top of the slot, the slot looks like 2 miles so thats 18 mile round trip.
It looks like a mile or two longer from the dirty devil strip but that old jeep track may be quicker, with or without bikes. Either way it's a long day.
If you don't see my report on the trip around Monday then come find me!

I just realized that you referenced hidden splendor and the muddy creek slot in your posts above. The muddy creek slot/chute has water flowing at various levels throughout the year, some guys try to kayak it during the 2 weeks per year that it's high enough.

The happy slot that I'm going to should be dry apart from seasonal runoff. I'll let you know either way.
When I first read your post I thought that you were headed to happy canyon too!
