Points to ponder - Health

I see Flywriters question on fear?

Well I haven't really been afraid of anything. I've done acro, loops, rolls, hammer heads, clover leafs, split S. I've had my 180 in places that made me sweat. I smacked a porkupine on a dark runway one night, didn't bother me at the time, but later with time to think, you bet. If it had been a deer-elk it would have been ugly.

Now I am in fear. I was diagnosed last week with ALS
http://www.alsa.org/ I didn't even know what it was. Anyway for those of you that know, you know what I'm up against.

Now there are break throughs in Medicine every day. Maybe that's my calling? A whole new version of "Experimental"

Take care, C ya, Bub

Robert "Bub" Wright, aka Skylane, passed away in November of 2011. He was a beloved community member and will be missed.

So sorry to hear that. I hope that you can recover. Don't know anything about ALS except that it's like Lou Gehrigs Disease? Prayers are with you and your family. Keep fighting. Jeff

Please accept my deepest concern for your what you are facing. How often do we take the basics in life such as our health for granted? When something like this comes along it truly puts life into perspective and makes us realize what is most important. Your sharing this news demonstrates a great deal of courage in my book.

With kindest regards,
Mike

Bub, I've been thinking about you all week since your earlier post in the For Sale thread.

ALS is really a tough hand to be dealt. My grandmother had it, I've seen it first hand. I'm sorry this is the hand you got.

Stephen Hawking, renowned astrophysicist and author has had it for the last 30+ years. I found this interesting to read, and his description of it in his book A Brief History of Time are interesting too.

I've got a lot of thoughts on the topic, but I'll wait until I see you to share them.

Bub, I'm not good at knowing what to say at times like this. Just know I'm thinking about you and your family. If I can help in any way don't hesitate to ask. Make the most of each day my friend.

Bub, so sorry. I just learned of LAS about a year ago myself. My 48 year old brother in law got it. Such a sad disease. Nothing has been advanced with LAS since it was discovered 80 years ago.

Have you seen or heard about the teacher that has terminal cancer who is going around giving "the last speech"? He has life figured out. Made me cry. John

And I see this morning in your expression here ~ yet again ... the attitude, spirit and sense of humor toward life that drew me to write about pilots in the first place.

Fear is so totally understandable of course for you right now; to say anything that speaks directly to that as you cope with the news you've just gotten would be condecending and insulting. We all ~ would experience the same apprehension ... for the same reasons you are. This is a very serious diagnosis...

But....but??? That said; the spirit and attitude of the pilot that wrote: "Well I haven't really been afraid of anything. I've done acro, loops, rolls, hammer heads, clover leafs, split S. I've had my 180 in places that made me sweat. I smacked a porkupine on a dark runway one night, didn't bother me at the time, but later with time to think, you bet. Speaks to a man who hasn't lived his life being deterred by much. I also can read here that you have a good community of friends ... draw on them. Patrol Guy mentioned Randy Pausch ~ the epitome of how attitude can affect how any of us deal with any card life hands us ... http://download.srv.cs.cmu.edu/~pausch/ when you feel you're ready.

Take good care ~ Susan

ALS

Bub, Get involved with the MDA (muscular dystraphy assn) if there is anyone that can help you with answers to your questions you should be able to find them there. I lost a younger brother to ALS about 17 years ago at 30 years old, He got very involved with the MDA and they were a big help to him with his fight against it and helping him to deal with it. Hang in there and live your life to the fullest every day! We are hoping & praying for a cure every day & advancements have been made every year.

Feel free to P.M. anytime
Hang in there

Bub:
I too have read your posts; you have written enough that I think most of us know you are a caring family man and a have a good work ethic. These qualities will help in the coming years. Modern medicine has and continues to make progress. In reading about ALS before writing you, I saw an article about a new drug that is stopping the disease. With your early diagnosis of ALS this drug should allow you lead a full life. I am sure your doctors know about this and have probably already prescribed it:

Recently the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Rilutek®, the first drug that has reliably prolonged the survival of persons with ALS. Patients, however, will not get stronger nor regain lost strength with this drug.

Take care, as several others wrote, you are in our thoughts and prayers.

The truth will set you on the path to being free

Bub,

I'm sorry to hear the news. Life isn't fair. The only constant, it seems, is change. I hope, as the future unfolds, you continue to find joy and happiness. You're a good man. That is obvious. Nothing can take that away from you.

Craig.

Good luck, don't give up. You might lick it, or have a long time of good quality of life. I don't know squat about the disease and don't have anything to offer but my prayers. If you ever have to travel through south Ga. you have a place to stay.

Bub,

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Same offer as a64pilot, if you need a place to stay in eastern PA you are more than welcome. We are little more than hour from NYC. I mention that because treatment may take you to that area. Absolutely, you are welcome!

Best, Rod
