Portland, or the Pacific Coast?

Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.

Portland, or the Pacific Coast?

Looking at going Flying Tuesday. I will be departing from Spokane, and am looking for someplace to go, and am thinking the Portland area. I usually head to the Seattle area and am looking for something different.

Have you been watching the Alaska Gold Rush show. Apparently the guys behind the mission operate an airport in Sandy, Oregon. Thought I might go check it out.

Looks like we'll have cold, crisp, clear weather on tuesday in the portland area, and should be a good opportunity to check out what the area has to offer, what do you recommend?

Thanks

Paul

Sandy River airport is a neat little place, I suggest dropping in and saying hi. Then head to Lenhardt Airpark in Hubbard. If the weather is nice there might be some interesting planes out of their hangars.

Seen the Alaska gold thing once. If they run the airport the way they run the gold thing, stay away.

Re: Portland, or the Pacific Coast?

Check out Daybreak, its about 15 miles north of PDX. It's a nice grass runway on the Lewis River. It's listed as private but everyone goes in there all the time with out any trouble. There are also a lot of other grass strips in the area to check out. Goheen, Brush Prairie, Cedars North, Fly For Fun. If you get hungry fly into Woodland and its a short walk into town where they have a few different restaurants, I always went to Burgerville, they have good milk shakes. If you want to fly out to the coast Copalis State is a must, land right on the beach! If you go further south down into Oregon, Pacific City is real nice. You can walk to the beach, Cape Kiwanda, or a lot of different shops and restaurants.

Stark's Twin Oaks is usually within $.10 one way or the other, too.

Stark's Twin Oaks has the pancake breakfast once a month too. What is it? second saturday of the month? I can't remember. Its a good place to go when the weather is good though, there's usualy quite a few planes that show up.

I would second Daybreak. Also the blimp museum and diner and TMK is pretty cool. If the weather is nice, fly out and see the Oregon Coast and make a stop at Nehalem state.

Re: Portland, or the Pacific Coast?

Hi Paul, this is my back yard. I would meet you but I will be in Madras S33 doing the annual on my Maule. I say Independence State 7S5. The restaurant on the field is real good and gas is cheap too. If you have time pop on over to Pacific City. This is my personal favorite in all of Oregon. 8 good restaurants all with in walking distance. If you are buy Pacific City might as well hit Tillamook. Taxi to the blimp hangar. The gift shop has unreal low prices. Restaurant good. McMinnville is totally rad. World class aviation museum. Spruce Goose. First rate restaurant in the aero space building.

If you come by Madras I'll buy us lunch or drinks. I have lots of room at my vacation home if you want to over night.

Cheers...Rob 503.720.one nine one seven

Re: Portland, or the Pacific Coast?

That's quite an offer Rob, thank you.

I am thinking I'll come down to see the maule with the inspection panels removed. I'll decide this afternoon and will let you know. What a bummer that I won't be able to stay and enjoy some pendlton and a bs session, we can still have a good bs session though.

It's great how pilots always have so much to talk about, always a good time to get together with another aviator.

Cheers

Stark,s Twinoaks breakfast is on Feb 5th put on by EAA chapter #105 but a lot of other groups participate so yes we get a variety of planes to show up, not only homebuilts.

I'm hoping that pic of Bubba draining gas through a funnel & on into a plastic gas can will ignite (get it? ) another discussion about static & grounding/bonding around gasoline.
Wait for it....wait for it.....
