Pponk O-470-50

Any body out there got a high time Pponk engine and still happy with the performance? It's overhaul time :( . Decisions decisions.

Mine has about 1800 hrs. Borscoped a few weeks ago and all looked good. Exhaust valves look great and you can still see the cross-hatching on the cylinder walls. Compressions are all in the mid 70's. I think I will go past TBO without problems. Starts in 1-2 blades every time. I add 1/2 qt max between oil changes (every 50 hrs), so oil burning is not an issue.

I went to P ponks web site and the avGas/auto fuel STC issue with this engine is not addressed.....
Avgas only? I guess in other words, is this a higher compression engine than the stock O-470? My guess is higher compression so no auto fuel.
Care to bring me up to speed?

Well, it looks like I may be in the same boat as my friend Glidergeek. I'm looking into a rebuild engine, too. I have a stock 470 in my Skylane.

I don't mean to jump in and a possible high jack of your thread, Russ. But do you mind if I do since we are both looking to rebuild or engines? Be a good thread to exchange info on 182/180 rebuild/new engines and Pponk versus stock. Honestly, I don't know jack about all the different engine types. But, I'm sure I will in the near future.

Looks like most rebuilds are in the $23k-$30k range. I've only checked out this website so far: http://www.airpowerinc.com/

Digging further, Pponk is saying the cost for their rebuild/mods are about the same as a stock rebuild. True??
The P. Ponk SUPER EAGLE engine conversion puts additional 35 to 45 horsepower under your cowl for about the same price as a factory rebuilt engine. Your aircraft will takeoff shorter, climb faster, cruise faster and be less expensive to operate on a per mile basis.

I have the Pponk O-470-50 in my 182. It has about a 1000 hours on it. I can make 50 hours without adding any oil. I'm on floats so lots of hard takeoffs as compared to wheels. It is a great motor. The Pponk motor is 520 cubic inch carburated, versus 470 for the stock 470's. They have low compressions pistons and will run auto fuel all day long. However, they are not approved for auto fuel. According to what Steve Knopp at Pponk told me, he was two years into getting the auto fuel approval and the FAA decided he needed to prove the engine would work with every blend of auto fuel from every state. At that point he threw in the towel. So the short answer is auto fuel is not legal. You will never go back to running the stock 470 after owning a Pponk. major power difference, fuel burn is the same or less. If you want to run the same speed as your plane did before with the 470, your fuel burn will be lower, plus you have the ability to run faster and way more power for takeoff. They are swiss watch smooth. I believe the rebuild to the pponk motor isn't much more, and the benefit is a longer TBO in addition to the safety of higher takeoff hp. I would talk to Steve Knopp directly. hard to get in touch with but he will return your calls and answer all your questions.

Pat don't worry about hijacking a thread this is all about learning, about how to spend $20K-$35K and not cry later. Best price for this mod I've found locally (So. Cal) is about $22.5K before prop not counting all the extras. The prop another 8-10K. I've got a phase 1 case anybody using one of these?

I talked with the guys at Firewall Forward in Colorado- met them at Oshkosh. They will overhaul an 0-470 to new limits with new ECI cylinders for $19.5k right now. Tom said that the lowest price they have had since 2004. They are hungry right now. Maybe they can build up a PPonk also?

I have the Pponk in my 66 182 and it is an awesome conversion. I have 500 hours on it now and would do it again without hesitation. The performance is excptional. Mine was built and installed by Steve in 2003.

Search for P-Ponk on BCP. There are several threads about the engine. I posted alot of details I experienced owning the engine in my 180.

Simple answer,.....DO IT! You will never look back :D :D And go direct with Steve Knopp at P-Ponk. Awesome all the way around.

Glass houses...both of you. :P

Rhyppa has a Pponk O-520 in his '73 182...what a snorter! It was awesome, and very smooth with that MT.

Do any of you know of this engine installed in a Stinson? I had heard it had been done , but haven't been able to find out any details. Contacted Pponk and they had heard it also , but had no info. Thanks

You can probably run the prop you have right now with the Pponk. BUT - if you get talked into a new prop, go with the MT. Knopp will try to get you to put a 3 blade 401 Mac on it. This spring I removed the 3 blade 401 from mine and went with the 2 blade MT. No comparison between the two. Plus the switch saved me 40 pounds -which is huge on the nose of an airplane. You'll be all smiles when you firewall it with the new motor.
