Pre-buy on 28,000 Pounds of Steel?

Hello Backcountry Pilots,

Doing a pre-buy on a Caterpillar 955H Tracked Loader to build my airstrip. In my price range I'm obviously not buying a newer machine. This crawler is located only 9 miles from my property. This will save me over $1500 in lowboy cost right there. I got a real expert (retired Caterpillar Service Manager) going with me to look it over. Wish me luck!

Well, SM even if it doesn't run, around here you could get $150/ton for it = $2,100 scrap. Hope you have a good machine for your job and at the right price. I like the looks of it better than the John Deere..this machine looks like it has been working.

955's are a good little machine. If it's had anything but total abuse, it should serve you well.

God put me here to accomplish a certain amount of things...right now I'm so far behind, I'll never die!!

I had one of those on my farm for about 5 years. Lots of fun.

Mine was a 951 i think, it was under powered and slow working loads but it did the job, also had a 4-1 bucket. The bucket is real handy and a major plus for work around the farm. I welded some hooks onto side to clamp onto logs for loading.

The cage is great for tree work. Knocking them down is easy but some hardwood stumps take a long time to cleanly remove.

My cat never cost me a cent except oil, fuel and grease. Well I did throw a track off in the middle of nowwhere, Got it stuck twice, You don't want to get it stuck. A big wrecker or tractor to drag that thing will cost ya.

Pushing trees down when its wet is great but if you want to dig or move dirt wait for dry weather. I had some pretty worn treads but if you pick your conditions well it really shouldn't matter.

If you are going to move much dirt more than 100 feet or so, you need a dump truck or lots of time.

I miss mine all the time, i replaced it with a giant John Deere with an assortment of attachments, My favorite is the grapple bucket!!

Enjoy the new toy. If it is like my D6, you will want to wear ear protection. Watch the sidehills, it is no fun when you throw a track.
