Project Retro Wagon - 180A

Well, time to add to the already great 180/185 threads on BCP.

After a long six months and a few ups and downs, I'm blessed to announce that I'm the new owner of a 1957 Cessna 180A!

I really have to thank the prior owner (of 24 years) for being a great caretaker and allowing it to be passed along to me. I have about a dozen hours in it and I am pretty impressed with what an old bone stock 180 will do. It's a dream to fly and will fit my mission with precision.

Basic specs include: 1700TT, IFR capable (for now), O-470K, very stock and retro, and fairly light.

For now, the mod list will be kept to BAS shoulder harnesses, BAS tail pull handle, and 100LL in the tanks. I kept my 31" bushwheels, double puck Cleveland's, and UBG-16 from the Stinson, so those will be transferred over when time permits.

Probably the best part of it all, my wife loves it and I see many family trips in the near future. :)

THANK YOU everyone for all the help and advice along the way!

Cool!

There's always been a special place in my heart for the old Cessna interior where one feels compelled to be wearing a liesure suit.

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

Very Cool! Several new 180 owners here.

I just bought a 67 model.

Everything great that I have heard about these machines, I have found to be true.

Congratulations Matt. That plane shows great care. You are a lucky man to have the support of your wife and your dog. Gonna risk another big tire video surprise for Christmas?

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

You are going to out run my 1957 182A.... without that draggy nosewheel. The wife here is rated, and insisted on the nose gear. Being a community property state in Arizona... I felt it would be rude to argue.
Low airframe time probably means there aren't even any squeaks in it.
If you haven't flown that cold carb (down low) combo on the 180A... you might try a touch of carb heat in cruise. I can run mine lean of peak with the throttle just barely back enough to swirl the fuel... and a bit of heat. I presume you have carb air temp? Crucial for that cold carb. as it will ice up even on a warm day when you least expect it.
If you are down near Prescott in the spring and want a free biennial check... just let me know.
Cheers,
Nick

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

Way to go Matt! That's a beaut.

Let me guess- the seller had just read the Jackass blog and wanted to distance himself from the reckless outlaw image of taildragger pilots?

Nice Matt! But you forgot with that interior you are obligated by law to wear a wool and checkered fedora along with rayon shirt and wide polyester tie. :D

Wholly Mellow Yellow Matt Man!
And I say this with the utmost respect and gratitude.

Is that interior original, or a 70's re-do like mine?
People were not very color neutral in that era for sure.
My brother and I used to kid our Dad if we were representing "Elvis Presley Vegas, 70's style".
All kidding aside, that 180 looks awesome! Glad your back in the air, and I can't wait for JC to see it in person.
