Propeller options for Cessna 172XP 1977

Friend bought a 172XP , and found out the prop has been damaged by the spinner being installed wrong.

So looking for a propeller, first choice was MT, but there is no STC for the IO360 Continental.

Any other options anyone knows of?
Trail Blazer? Others?
Composite its the first choice.

Did you call flight resource? Maybe they can help with approvals. Base it on the Cessna 337 STC.

Yes Flight Resource was my first option, no STC for the 172XP with Continental IO 360.
He wanted an MT two blade.

Did you actually call them or just refer to their STC list on their website? Give them a call if you haven’t.

It helps if you specify what he wants.

On that plane, I’d probably prefer the three blade in any case.

Would you prefer a 3 blade even if it is metal and not composite?

No, too heavy, in that case. CG would be too far forward.

The three blade MT on that six cylinder engine would be smooth as butter.

Re: Propeller options for Cessna 172XP 1977

Call flight resources. They may not list a stc for a 172XP but I know of at least one 172XP with a 3-bladed MT.

Jones Brothers seaplane training operates an XP with a 3-bladed MT on it. Leads me to think it should be a fairly easy field approval since it has already been done in the past and flight resources seems to be really good at that.

Ummm, I posted a link to the STC for the three blade MT prop on the R172K (Hawk XP) earlier in this thread. The OP responded that a TWO blade prop was desired.

Depends on who you're dealing with.
I applied for a field approval for 26" GY's on my C180 a few years ago--
even though I had multiple previously approved 337's for the same mod as documentation,
it took 11 months & several follow up emails & phone calls to knock a field approval out of the Seattle FSDO.
Getting a field approval for a prop? Not likely IMHO, not from SEA FSDO anyways.

Plane is Costa Rica registered , and in Costa Rica, so no field approval, they only allow STCs :(

Re: Propeller options for Cessna 172XP 1977

Does Costa Rica allows for only an FAA stc? The one posted by MTV is an EASA STC. Not much use in the USA but EASA certification might work there? Still a triple, but it would be smooth!

EASA STCs are considered “Approved Data” by the FAA. Still takes someone to sign it, but they can’t argue the data.

Re: Propeller options for Cessna 172XP 1977

MTV, thanks for that gem of wisdom. I had no idea about the applicability of an EASA STC with regards to the FAA. Very cool. One more little tidbit to file away for future use.
