Pullman, WA

I'm moving to Pullman, Washington this August. Does anyone know of hangars for rent (already called interstate aviation at KPUW and they don't have any) to keep my cessna 170 out of the weather? Or is hangaring a Cessna in that climate an unecessary luxury (in Southeast Alaska it's not!)? Any cool places to explore (I have the 8:50x10s, wide tailwheel and a 180 hp lycoming)? Any tips about flying in the area? I'll be coming from Alaska where I've done most of my flying and am used to just jumping in the plane and going wherever...

Check for a Hangar in Lewiston KLWS. It's about a 30 min drive from Pullman. Pullman is a college town. By air your close to a lot of awesome flying and strips in that area. Lewiston has an active EAA chapter and Dean Wilson the designer of my airplane hangs out there sometimes. Enjoy! I wish I lived back in that area.

Re: Pullman, WA

I moved to Moscow a year ago and went through the same process. Interstate didn't have what I wanted at the time so I had to expand my search to nearby airports and I'm pretty glad I did. I ended up at Schoepflin Airport (WN26) near Palouse, WA. Its a small private strip north of Moscow, about a 12 minute drive for me, that occasionally has hangars for rent. Dale and his son are pretty great guys and the runway is a 2200' x 50' paved strip with a small crosswind runway for those oddball wind days. The strip does have a pretty good slope to it though, sort of like landing in a bowl. The hangars are new and I just like the way my plane looks on the ramp with the pastoral background.

Colfax is your other option. It on the charts as Port of Whitman (S94). They had a hangar that I almost got but the one at Schoepflin opened up at the last minute. The hangars there are also new but more expensive (~$230 a month). They also wanted to verify my insurance, have me register my plane in Washington, and sign a lease before letting me move in. I thought it was strange that the hangars they were trying to rent had "squatters" in them when I went to check them out but they assured me they would kick them out if I signed a lease. I'm pretty sure those guys hadn't been forced through the same hoops I was having to go through. The county seems to own the airport and they really market it as an industrial hub, which I find odd. Lots of spray planes and other agriculture based businesses on the field. Its not a bad option if you can't find a hangar at any other location I guess.

With the amount of rain and wind we get here you'll want a hangar, especially if you have a ragwing plane like I do.

As for fun places to fly? We can pull out a section when you get here, this place is a playground for grass strips.

+1 for WN26. Very cool place. I learned to fly out of Pullman and there are a bunch of grass strips around. AK is probly much cooler but the palouse is a lot of fun to fly around and the Idaho backcountry is pretty close.

Re: Pullman, WA

AKclimber, I live in Pullman and own 2 hangers at the Pullman Airport. Both of mine are taken right now, but I will ask around and see what might be available. This is a great place to fly. Lots of Idaho backcountry within an hour flight, And in the winter time Hells Canyon is a paradise. Let me know when you will be arriving.

Re: Pullman, WA

Thanks for all the replies - and I will be arriving sometime end of July to beginning of August. Any recommendations for a good A&P/IA? Got to finish the annual up here in July and then wait for the weather window. Alan, I'll give you a heads up as the time nears - in the meantime I might just get a tie down spot at the airport - or at least get on a wait list for the west facing tiedowns. On the way down I am planning on clearing customs at Scott (0S7) - looks like a nice place to stop, or does anyone recommend a better option?

Then you need to know about RIco's and Gambino's. Look them up when you get there. :D
