Putting my cert's to work
A general forum for anything related to flying the backcountry. Please check first if your new topic fits better into a more specific forum before posting.
Well after 20+ years since graduating with an aviation degree and ratings to match, I am putting my certificates to work. Excited to be flying with Redtail out of moab. Will be flying the mighty 172 and C207 this summer. It's been awhile since I have been active on this board, well since I regrettably sold my 59' 182 -- wish I still had it as it would make the commute a lot easier from Gunnison, CO to moab.
Start Part 135 school May 14th and with any luck be up and flying a bunch by the end of May.
I have been looking at options for a plane to commute with --- 1 hr flight vs a 4+ hr drive , but just can't put it together.
I will try to put some pictures of the various flying for the group.

Nice! Looks like their website has some good ideas for places to fly over out that way too.

That sounds like a fun job! I’d love to do something like that when I retire from the Air Force.

Lots of fun dirt strips. Hite and Sand Wash Airstrip will be the most common I fly into for river shuttles.

I think Redtail would be a cool outfit to work for. I was on the website day dreaming just a few days ago. Congrats!

Was thinking about caveman and lining up the cars to light the landing ...

Congrats!
I stopped through RedTail a couple weeks ago at Carbon County. Great FBO and cool-looking airplanes. They let us look at a 207, a GA-8, and a Kodiak Quest. Definitely one of the coolest-looking jobs I've come across in the Lower 48!

Yes it has been.. If you make it over to Gunnison / Crested Butte or Moab let me know. We opened an outdoor retail store here in Crested Butte 3 years ago, that brought us back to CO from AZ.

I wish I would have known that. I flew over you last week!
Let's catch up!

I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but be freaking careful. They've been averaging about 1 fatal crash per year. Don't be afraid to turn around or refuse a trip. If they wan't to fire you, fine. That'll probably help your career more in the long run.

And there are ways to do the job safely. Always expect an engine failure, but don't fear it. If you always have a way to lower terrain, you're not going to get anyone hurt. Don't get crazy about climbing in bad air. It isn't going to slam you into the ground. Pitch down or at least level. Good air is out there. Climb in good air. Turn steeply to turn down hill if you need to. Just don't pull back on the yoke. Be quick but not hurried, that is stay out ahead of the airplane. Airplanes do reasonably well if we don't get excited and we don't insist on climbing. If we can get pointed down hill, we don't have to climb. Tourists are there for the ride. There is no have to get there destination.
