Question for the GPS challenged

I'm trying to load Dewey, Mile Hi, Vines, into my 196. I don't have a program for a computer interface. I was given the coordinates to all of these so I'm trying to just load them manually as waypoints. The problem I'm having is Dewey is at N45'9xxxxxxx When I go to load it when I get to the third digit of 9 the GPS only goes to 5. Once it hits 5 it just goes back to zero. Any idea why it's not letting me put whatever the heck I want in there for coords?

Re: Question for the GPS challenged

Joey,
*Important*

Menu>Menu>Location>Location Format...

Verify the location format your 196 is set up in is the same as the format for your coordinates. If not your coordinates wont get anywhere near where you want to be. Also what source are you using for you coordinates? The reason I am asking is because some sources just don't carry a particular format out as far. For example if your garmin formatted as hddd°mm'ss.s" it lists 7 characters, the corresponding format for google earth is Degrees, Minutes, Seconds and it goes out to 8 Characters. The only 9 digit format on a Garmin I can think of is hddd°mm.mmm, but it is still important to verify that, that is in fact the format of your coordinates.

Hope this helps, feel free to pm me if it sounded too confusing.

Take care, Rob

Re: Question for the GPS challenged

Thanks Rob I changed the format and it still won't go past 5. I was sent a google earth file with flags on all the strips in the Big Creek drainage. Here is what I have and the format for Mile Hi. Someone want to verify? When I go to create a custom waypoint when I get to that third number of 9 minutes my GPS won't go past 5 minutes. Weird because I've built custom waypoints for geocaching and stuff in this GPS before and never had this issue.

45° 9'4.80"N

114°59'32.40"W

Re: Question for the GPS challenged

Joey, it thinks you are telling it 90 minutes, which doesn't fit in an hour, you want 09 minutes. Sorry I didn't understand what you were getting at the first time, till you posted the whole coordinate! And on the Garmin that will be a hddd°mm'ss.s" format.

Take care, Rob

Re: Question for the GPS challenged

Having said that you need to verify your long... it appears to be one ridge off  ...I'm seeing something more along the lines of 114°59'.54"....ish YMMV

Re: Question for the GPS challenged

I think the lat/long of these strips are in the Fly Idaho book.
