R44 (5) Years: owning, flying, maintaining

Today is the 5th year anniversary of my ship’s delivery. I feel really lucky to have RHC and all the fine folks supporting my introduction into rotorcraft. Thank you BCP for connecting me to other rotorcraft pilots and mechanics.

“New car smell” when I received the keys. November 2018, KTOR.

I had just finished the mechanics course which was conveniently next to the delivery office.

I thought to myself, “Hope I can handle this ship…”

Can you post some pictures of the back seat/Cargo area? I have never seen a Cadet model and was curious how that area is laid out since it’s a 2 seat 44.

Thanks!

Hello Kurt,

The aft cabin layout is very similar except for the seat cushions, safety belts, headset jacks, door windows and placards. It’s perfect for me!

Below, aft compartment with a 33 gallon TurtlePac (picture is sideways, sorry about that):

Cool! Ive always wondered what the back of a Cadet looks like. What are the other advantages of the Cadet?

Thank you! The Cadet is lighter and usually a bit less for insurance (per seats). I love the hydraulics compared to the R22.

Thanks! I love helicopters. I have owned a R-22 and Bell 47 in the past. Friend had a 44 and I flew that some, I really liked it. Attended the Robinson Safety Course in 2004, that was a great worthwhile course.

Video supplement to Lycoming SB388C — recommended addition to a digital tool box:

SB388C’s intent is to reduce the chance of exhaust valves sticking due to carbon and other impurities. Interesting YouTube video below summarizes the removal and installation of the exhaust valve with the cylinder still installed. The creator of the video did a fine job making it clean and brief. I recommend Lycoming mechanics keep this video in their library of “How to…” documents.

What do you guys think, especially helicopter mechanics? Pretty nice videography eh?

Note: YouTube app must be installed on your device. Please follow the link to watch on YouTube…
