Good morning gents, our private grass strip airport requires some TLC. It all started when my grandpa Harry moved up to Minnesota. When he moved here he left the airport and 185 behind for my uncle to take care of. He did a good job of taking care of the strip itself and his portion of the property but without anyone using our portion of the property it quickly turned into what it is now.
I plan on traveling back down to Texas as soon as I can. During that trip, I would like to get the ball rolling on a few things.
The first thing that immediately grabs my attention is that our airport is placed in the wrong spot! Google maps depicts the runway as the street that the airport is on and displays the airport as being a mile away from where it is (insert joke about the non-precision approach here) ForeFlight my new GTN and the paper sectionals also show it in the wrong spot. How would I go about getting this corrected?
The second thing that I would like to start getting information about is resurfacing or making the bumps go away on the runway and taxiways. When I was there a few months ago, it was bumpy enough for me to tell my buddy to drive four hours instead of flying over in his Skywagon. I have heard many ideas on how to fix it ranging from driving up and down the runway with the pickup truck to calling the county and having them use their industrial graders and rollers when they resurface the dirt roads again which will never happen because the dirt roads have not been resurfaced since the last time my 185 flew. We are also in need of a new mower… Ours is run on the farm tractors by using their PTO system (it just occurred to me that I am not a farmer/rancher and have almost no idea how to not sound stupid asking about this)
I will be able to provide more information on this topic when I am down there next. All I know is that if I wanted to I could stick my hand through the rust holes in the housing.
What I will be doing is talking to the owners of some private strips (looking at you Skydive Houston) and inquiring about what they do to care for their grass runways. And I will also try talking to the Texas A&M extension and seeing what they can do for me. That leaves me with a question for you guys. If you think of anything that might make my job of refurbishing the little grass strip a little easier, could you share?
Photos to come,
Ryan
