Rans S-20 Build with Pictures

Just completed and now flying my Rans S-20 Raven. It is located at 1W1 Camas Grove Field. In phase 1 testing currently. If you see me out and about in the PNW, please say hello!

That is a beautiful plane, good job.

How did you find the build? How many hours do you have in it? Quick build?

If I were in a position to build, this or the S21 would be at the top of the list.

It was delivered on October 12th 2015. So it took a year. It was a regular build. Rocky Mountain Kitplanes helped me cover it. They painted it. They do a nice job. I logged 1175 hours of build time. My first build and work slow and methodically. It weighs 760 LBs empty which give me 560 LBs useful load. Not bad for a light sport! Climbs very well.

Yes, the S-21 Outbound should be an awesome aircraft. Riblet airfoil, slotted flaps. Waiting to see what the speed envelope looks like. Should be quite an aircraft.

Good job on the build - it really looks nice. How does it fly? Any surprises or major tweaks needed? It's too bad that you had to start your phase 1 testing just as the weather is turning south for the year. You'll still be able to squeeze in the requisite time before next year's serious flying season begins. Enjoy getting to know your new toy!

Yes, I thought I would be flying it by summer but I missed it. Il be ready for next year. It flew wings level on the first flight. The oil temp is on the high side and I am changing the angle on the cooler that sits in the left intake etc (Rotax 912ULS). Climbs very well and have been impressed with the short takeoff and landing performance. Stalls in the low 30's. I added VG's as well. 760Lbs empty with 560 Lb useful load. Not bad for an LSA. 46 inches across the shoulder makes it comfortable for two. I been away from GA planes for awhile. Seems like a rudder airplane to me. At 5500 max con I have been getting 112 MPH true and 5.2 GPH on pump gas. 5200 RPM roughly 80% I see 103 TAS.

I am still slightly under pitched on my Whirl Wind 75" Stol prop. I need to add 1 degree or more. Love the Skyview and the ADSB in and out. Traffic stuff is awesome, Sat, weather etc.

Also, I have a coolant heater and it really heats things up in the cabin if you need it. Just getting my feet wet . Need more stick time but I really like the aircraft so far.

That's a nice low empty weight, especially with that panel and a few of the extras you mention (coolant heater). Good job! I'll be seeing Mark at Rocky Mountain Kitplanes in a few days, as I make up my mind what I want to do next, if anything, as my S-7S reaches 2000 hrs. TT. Building an S-20 is one option, another is doing some (more ) mods on my flying bird and get Joel Milloway to build me a pair of his carbon fiber wing pods for when i really feel the need to haul more stuff. He has a under construction S-20 in the shop right now, and I eyeball it often, and even have seen how my folding e bike fits in it (super easy), I also checked out that if I left the passenger seat at home, I could sleep in it, with a little platform mod where the pas. seat goes. I love that S-7/S-20 wing, but just not sure I want to go over to the dark side, side by side! But the room it offers is seductive.....Your year building time, even with some help from RMKP, is real good for a first timer.

Hi Courier Guy,

I have been following your mod ideas.I have a bike with S&S couplers that breaks at the top tube and down tube. It will definitely fit I just need to figure out away to stabilize it. Maybe span a bar between the wing closeouts.Im sure you could sleep in it with one of your floor mods. Alina's bird will be done soon and you check hers out. I will get out your way eventually and you can fly mine.Carbon fiber pods are slick. A friend is close to completing a S-7 on the field. Super nice and light build w/ oratex fabric. Should be a real performer. Mark has a beautiful S-7 as well.

Best,
Jim
