Red Bull Air Race on hiatus for 2011

http://www.redbullairrace.com/cs/Satellite/en_air/Article/STATEMENT---World-Championship-confirms-one-year-021242877560993

redbullairrace.com wrote:Red Bull Air Race GmbH confirmed that for the future success and development of the sport, the World Championship will take a one-year break in 2011.

The organization will use this opportunity to fast track the technological advancements currently in the making which would further improve the already high levels of safety.

There is a need to revise the main organization and commercial areas to realize the full potential of the sport including the development and reinforcement of strong host city partnerships which would secure a long term race calendar.

That sucks.

That really stinks, I hope they can get back on their feet.

Does anybody know how they get revenue from the races? How do you sell tickets for that type of a venue?

I'm not really sure. But, I know a can of Red Bull is about $2.00 and most stores  So, think of the billions of cans being sold every year world wide   Crazy!!

They sell tickets just like they do for concerts or other events. I went to the Monument Valley race and it was incredible! Bought my tickets online, drove down and picked them up in "will call" at the event headquarters (a hotel in Bluff, UT).

I read the other day that they don't win any money in the events because the nations in Europe figured this would push the pilots to the limits... this was mentioned in an interview of one of the pilots and he just laughed and said, "I don't think we can push the limits any more than we already do." He stated that you can get sponsors obviously and that Red Bull gives each pilot a yearly budget.

The races in the states are small compared to in Europe. I have read that some of the European events have brought in upwards of 500,000 spectators! I think there was only a couple thousand tickets sold for the Monument Valley race. Venue obviously plays a large part in this also.
