Re: Redtail Plane Down in Moab

Its so sad to read this, because Kim was a super pilot and knew how to take the bull by the horns. He was also a great man. --Fun to be around, really down to earth and a no BS straight shooter. He hooked me up big-time (for charity prices) in his Pathfinder and taught me how to fly instruments. He even took me on a weekend family trip to Washington DC so I could experience flying through the ADIZ. We practically duked it out in the cockpit once after landing at Lunkin Airport in Cincinnati after some intense flying through weather. Luckily he was/is a teddy bear because he was 275 pounds and I'm not. He loved to fly so much. I'll never forget going in the clouds for the first time. My equilibrium got screwed up immediately and my head hit the window. I banked the plane all out of wack to adjust. He just asked "what are you doing?"

His wife is an amazing (and unique) woman. She was my band director in high school. I assumed she hated me because we were always up to no good in the drum section in the back. We turned cymbal stands and chime mallets into weapons worthy of detentions. I hadn't seen her in 25 years and she married Kim in the meantime. Soon after we found each other from the mutual discovery of flight. After finding out I had given up on spitwads, she rallied Kim Ruble to teach me a thing or two. Just after I got my ticket they left Morgan County, Ohio and started their new life out west.

I visited them a couple times on my trips west to Glacier and Moab to explore. They manage campgrounds and live the good life picking up camp and moving occasionally. He hit it off with Redtail. Moab is one of my favorite places on earth, and he was one of my favorite pilots. What a bummer. He has a cameo in one of my early videos but it wouldn't do him justice. He wore wide brim leather hats. Cool dude.

Oh dear… didn't realize this was Kim. he is the only Redtail pilot I know and didn't even consider it would be him. Bummer

I follow his posts on Facebook as he is always posting cool photos and seems to be on a continuous adventure.

RIP Kim

Do you know if this happened in his Cherokee, Kodiak or other????

Edit: Got my answer-

Sorry to hear this news. I never met Kim, but I have heard a lot of great things about him, being a local guy. So sad. I will be praying for his friends and family.

Re: Redtail Plane Down in Moab

Wires are one of the things that scare the crap out of me. I flew for so long where there are none that I have to continually remind myself they're out there.

My heart goes out to his family, friends and co-workers.....a tough deal, and a terrible loss.

Wow, he seems like a really great guy! I'm sad I'll never get to meet him. Godspeed and I'll pray for him and his family.

My condolences to all who are suffering, including his friends. Sometimes losing a friend is harder than losing a relative--we get to pick our friends.

Power lines scare the crap out of me as well. I have these recurring dreams where I am flying and I end up with some power lines in my flight path. I avoid them and then more appear in front of me, I avoid those too, then more and more appear in front of me and the maneuvering necessary to avoid them becomes too demanding. Then I wake up. I avoid power lines like I avoid portable toilets. Flying low in remote areas is too fun though, and that is where power lines live.

And condolences to all affected by this tragedy.

Definitely had those nightmares as well. No matter where I turn, climb etc. there are gobs of lines around me. Anyway, thankfully just a dream, unlike in this case where the nightmare became reality. Sorry to hear about the loss :( Sad news....

Re: Redtail Plane Down in Moab

FWIW the power lines didn't make any difference, the result would have been the same in this case.

RIP Kim

Same recurring dream. I'm usually taking off on some narrow road in the country or a city street and suddenly have to dodge up or down to avoid them. Eventually I wake up with my heart pounding.

But I also have a recurring dream of landing in a nice wide verdant valley, onto smooth grass, and park next to a burbling stream to set up camp. That one is pretty relaxing.
