Re: rendering

Always thought that rendering is what is done to a dead horse that has been sent to the glue factory.

Humor may not make the world go around, but it certainly cheers up the process... :)
With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).

H.264 is a codec, so your software needs to have it you use to create the single-file video file (apparently called rendering, although I haven't heard that term before). If you convert to it after the fact, you're probably going to get worse quality. At least that's the way "lossy" codecs normally work...

Along those lines, you may want to try figuring out what your source files (the "raw" video footage) are encoded in. If you stick with the same thing for your final product, you may have good luck.

Take this all with a big honkin' grain of salt as I'm much more in theoretical territory on this than experiential. ;)

I use Adobe CS5. Premier Pro for the editing, and Adobe Media Encoder for the export, or render. When you have titles, audio, effects, transitions, etc, "rendering" is the process of distilling it all into a single video file.

Do not use the highest quality original media format as mckim suggests above. Use the appropriate quality and compression for the usage, in this case web streaming. Vimeo and YouTube only require my above mentioned specs.

I should probably clarify what I meant. I didn't necessarily mean the highest possible. But I've seen cases where changing "families" of formats from source to output can cause trouble. Zane, you're correct that appropriate quality and compression are to be considered. For example, I don't post original, full-size, minimally compressed photos on the web. For me, those would be 12+ MB and everyone would hate me. :P

The way codecs work (in a very general sense): A codec is a program that compresses/decompresses data into/from a particular format. Most are what are termed "lossy", meaning you lose some of the original information when you encode and compress it. When you play it, it's decoded and uncompressed, but it's still missing that lost information. You probably don't notice it unless you got carried away with it.

Now, here's where the problem can creep in. Say you have a video that you rendered to some format. Now you want to use incorporate that video clip into another video so you can make a travelogue. But, you use a different format type and sampling rate, etc. for this compilation. Now, the software has to resample your video/audio files, which may not work very well. Your particular settings may work well, but it's not too difficult to get some rather rough output.

That all said, I probably got into a corner case for many people without realizing it. If your source is H.264, using H.264 output with decreased settings should work superbly. Especially because H.264 is designed to do that well. Time for me to shut up on this topic before I get way outside what I know. Transfusion of knowledge from friends only goes so far. ;)
