Renters Insurance

I know most of you own your own airplane (hopefully one day i'll be in that group) but for right now I rent. Insurance for the aircraft is easy figure out after talking to the flight school but personal liability is a little different. Do any of you have advice or a preference. I know the best answer is whatever you can afford and makes you sleep easy but I thought I would ask you all.

Occurrence / Passenger
250,000 / 25,000
500,000 / 50,000
500,000 /100,000
1,000,000 / 100,000

Its premium increases about $30 each level.

Thanks

Re: Renters Insurance

To me its really how much insurance you can afford vs. how much you have to afford to lose if you don't have coverage. I use to carry very little when all I had to lose was my pickip truck; now I carry much more since I have a house, family timber property etc.

To me liability insurance is cheap peace of mind.

Re: Renters Insurance

THat appears to be just liability insurance. As noted, liability insurance will depend on how big a target you are, financially. If you don't have a pot to pee in, it's not likely that anyone is going to come after you with hammer and tongs.

BUT, if you're renting an airplane, bear in mind that the HULL insurance on that aircraft indemnifies the OWNER of the airplane, NOT the renter. So, if it's determined that you did something stupid, the insurance company can attempt to subrogate against YOU for their loss. They'll pay the owner off, then come after you. I don't know how often that happens, but.....

Further, there is nearly always a substantial deductable on rental airplanes....maybe $10 K. Guess who's going to be expected to pay that? Not the owner.

I'm a big believer in non owned aircraft insurance. BOTH liability and Hull coverage, though.

True story. They (FBO's insurance Co.) can demand FULL payment for damages from you/the renter. If you do not pay they can get a court order for you to pay and lien your property/assets. If you have no assets, it is NOT game over. They can get a court order against your future earnings/wages including reasonable interest on the unpaid balance.
Relax, typically this only happens when you have done something to cause the loss that is careless, against some regulation somewhere, avoidable, not allowed in the renters contract, or.....well, you get the picture. Nobody makes those kinds of errors, right?
It is always wise to stay out of the legal system. A courtroom is like a football in that it can take VERY unpredictable bounces (read unfavorable) with the full force of LAW behind it. I have been absolutely AMAZED at some of the severely illogical civil court rulings locally. Your area may be better(good luck with that).

Sorry, Mike. Had to agree with you again,

With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).

Re: Renters Insurance

To the original question, aircraft OWNER'S insurance typically offers a million per incident and $100 K per passenger liability. If that's what most owners carry, that's what I'd shoot for in liability, but then as noted, I'd TRY to ensure some hull coverage as well, at least to cover the deductible on the owner's insurance.

Also, anyone who flight instructs, even a flight review now and again, should consider instructor's insurance. Remember, if anything goes wrong, YOU are PIC in the FAA's mind.

And, Littlecub, I'll try to do worse next time... :D
