Rezrider's going to fly south, an aerial expedition.

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Rezrider's going to fly south, an aerial expedition.

Thanks guys. The permit for Colombia came through so we depart Panama city for Cartagena on Monday.
We have no idea just how easy it is and how lucky we are to experience flying the way we do in the US. Its much more restrictive elsewhere.
Catch y'all later,
Adios.

Re: Rezrider's going to fly south, an aerial expedition.

A quick update from us. We just crossed into Peru, took two weeks for the permit to come through. It feels good to be back in the air after a break of almost three weeks touring Ecuador by car, boat, foot!
Things are drying out now that we are through the ITCZ.
A new blog update can be found at: www.emcincofliessouth.com
Take care all and fly safe!

Following on from the '7500 members not flying' topic, I thought I would make some effort and add some pics for those in the doldrums of winter!

Image
The volcano Popocatepetl, in Mexico which we could never say so properly we nicknamed it 'coco pops' ! Only 17,000 odd feet msl.

Image
A sweet grass strip in Samara Costa Rica, run by some German guys doing gyrocopter tours. It's pretty green around there in the rainy season.
Image

I'll see how these turn out and add more if you guys like it.

More Costa Rica photos.

Despite the rain we had some great weather for flying, usually in the mornings.
Image
We showed up at this guy's place and ended up have a great time hanging out and telling stories!
Image
Long wet grass = full power for taxi. An awesome lodge up in the mountains, it was nice to cool off after sweating at the beach.

Have you read "Flying South" by Barbara Rowell? Good story of a pilot who flies her 206 in a circumnavigation of South America.

Yes, read it before we left as part of the trip research. I can't say that I loved it. We are in Doug Tompkins country now, may he RIP.

Re: Rezrider's going to fly south, an aerial expedition.

Where was I? Panama came next for us. Similar to flying in Costa Rica but with a little bit more aviation infrustructure.
Image
This is El Porvenir in the San Blas islands. Don't land long and don't land too sort!
Image
We tied down in the grass under a palm tree and caught a boat to a nearby island for a few nights.
Image
Here we are on the Pacific side now and about to land on Contadora island.
Image
Parked at Contadora airport.
Image
The flags are starting to pile up!

More to come, maybe, depends on the wifi.

Re: Rezrider's going to fly south, an aerial expedition.

I found a few more from Panama.

We had a good view of the new locks on the Atlantic side of the canal. Here's a mind trip for you, when flying the canal from the Pacific side to the Atlantic side your compass will read northwest!!!

Image
At Bocas del Toro 'international' airport the locals have decided that the grass next to the ramp makes for a good place to play soccer. We stayed there for a few days and I rode a bike 'through' the airport to check on the plane a few times.

More to come. Some pics are on SD cards buried in the bowels of Emcinco but I'll share what I can.

Super picture of the canal. Would it be alright to put that on my Facebook page and say a Backcountry friend is really having an adventure.
