River run, Mt run and rolling.

Same river I fly over in my 182 quite often, flew it in the Nanchang at more than twice the speed, very fun, definitely more challenging and intense, at this speeds compared to the 182 speeds when I fly it there.

Re: River run, Mt run and rolling.

Wow, cool!

2 questions,

What do the VG's do to the flying characteristics of the airplane? Seems to me they may not be what you would want on an aerobatic airplane?

Cool helmet, any details on it you could provide? What audio equipment? I use Lightspeed Zulu 2 and 3 headsets, Bose dont work for me. Is it heavy?

Thanks!

Re: River run, Mt run and rolling.

Energy management turns would take the gs out of the river run.

VGs gives faster roll rate, something you want in a Nanchang, easier recovery from spins, and slower stall speed.

Helmet brand is Lift, the best , lightest and most comfortable helmet I ever worn (I raced moto professionally for 15 years so know about helmets).

Was going to do Bose or Lightspeed, they dont work with an airplane this loud, the ANR gets crazy and becomes a loud buzz.

I used Clarity Aloft, comfortable, no install required and great sound quality.

Yes Contact, I was pulling some Gs in those turns
Initially I started trying energy turns , but ended up going much higher than what I wanted at every turn.
In the 182 I do this river run at 60 to 65 mph, and energy turns are easy.
In the CJ 6 I was doing this run at about 155 to 160mph, this time wanted to feel how was doing it faster speeds.

Is there a trick for fast energy turns and staying low?

Re: River run, Mt run and rolling.

Yes, the extra airspeed results in extra altitude in the pull up to start the turn. The slower speed and greater altitude allow whatever bank necessary and the extra altitude can be traded back for airspeed.

My boss at Brenco flew a turbocharged Centurian. Too fast for crooked pipelines, but doable with energy management.

Be careful with hairpin turns.

I like your helmet camera.

I'd sure hate to be out there loafing along in a Cub at 80mph, hugging the right side of the river, as you came around the corner on the wrong side of the road at 160mph, closing on me at 240. Maybe you had them designate the MOA hot?

Re: River run, Mt run and rolling.

I assume most of this type recreational flying is in little or no wind. On pipelines in heat, wind, and high density altitude, both energy management and wind management become critical.

I try to fly mostly weekdays, this was on Monday at 9ish, and on freq reporting positions.
First flew opposite direction and higher, then turned around to do the river run.

@Contact no winds, cool morning calm weather.

Re: River run, Mt run and rolling.

What are "energy management turns"? Or "energy turns"? What does one do when accomplishing these maneuvers?

In simple speak please.

WOW!

That was fantastic!

Over the top beautiful and inspiring, ESPECIALLY the Washington Cascades!

I love living and flying in the PNW in general and Wahington in particular!

Thanks for sharing!

Do you guys have a "river" or common "backcountry" frequency in that area? Or do you just use 122.9 because most of the small airports are on 122.9 CTAF?

Around here the closest airports to the fun river bar flying are on different CTAF frequencies, and I've heard some pilots say they just like being on "fingers" for playing on the river. I've also spotted aircraft that didn't respond on any of the frequencies I tried, so it's hard to have much faith in radio reporting.

Don't get me wrong, looks fun going that fast.

This river run is between two airports, Darrington and Concrete, both airports use 122.90, so that is the freq I use when flying around here.
When flying with Jughead we fly on fingers freq and monitoring 122.90.

And I agree t's hard to have much faith in radio reporting.
Even at Arlington airport which is very busy (read zoo) there are few airplanes not making any calls, and if they are not making a call at an airport, means no calls ever during flight.

Re: River run, Mt run and rolling.

The mix of the high mountain flying and the down low rat racing was great, different, very cool. It just goes to show how much fun we pilots can have.

It reminded of the time I flew over Idaho's highest point, and then a few hours later, it's lowest point, non stop, just because I could!

I'm Just wondering why nobody seems to use 122.75 for air to air?

So you guys dont have a set air to air frequency down there? Interesting. In Canada we use 126.7. Its nice to have a set frequency that all traffic should be on or monitoring outside of airport airspace.

122.75 is the set air to air frequency down here.
