Re: rome state?

I've read in the past that it was built by the state of oregon as an emergency strip in the 1960's, but a quick check on google shows it was activated in 1943. The one time I landed there and walked around for a bit I didn't see any trace of anything except a paved strip and some tie-down rings (bring your own ropes). Now that you've made me courious about it I will try to fly out there this weekend with a camera and lunch to see what I can find. If I find anything worth looking at I'll let you know.

Re: rome state?

After a few hours on Google and a morning flying out there to look around, here's what I came up with. The runway was built during the war, and was originally about 450 foot wide and over 8,000 foot long, the part still in use is 150 foot wide by 6,000 foot long, gravel surface in very good condition. ODOT has installed a new windsock with a segmented circle of truck tires painted orange and white (it fits the budget), and 2 sets of tiedowns at the east end with good steel chains. =D> I cannot find any trace of any roads, buildings, foundations, excavation, leveling, non-native trees, rose bushes gone wild, trash piles, anything vandalized and shot full of holes, or any other type of dirt work ever being done around the runway. I can't see any trace of any construction except the actual runway, from the air or on the ground. The only reference I can find of it during the war was that it was called "Rome Flight Strip" and was built as an emergency landing field for flight training crews. After the war it was declared surplus and given to the state of oregon. Across hiway 95 east of the airport is an FAA VOR station and what appears to be a gravel quarry that has been abandoned for a few decades, the only structure left there looks like 2 concrete walls several feet apart, possibly a loading dock. This quarry could be the source for the buildings at Basque. If anyone else can dig up anything more about this place, please let me know.

Re: rome state?

Could try pinging William Miller with IAA. I think his email is on their webpage. He spent quite a bit of time flying out that direction with the Guard and I'll bet he knows some of the history, or at least knows someone that did or does.
He is the same guy. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9916&p=130429&hilit=bill+miller#p130429
