As I stated in other post Rome was a military training base during the war does any one have pics or further history on Rome state .
lived in one of the houses that was orig[googlemap][/googlemap]inally located there??
I cannot find any trace of any roads, buildings, foundations, excavation, leveling, non-native trees, rose bushes gone wild, trash piles, anything vandalized and shot full of holes, or any other type of dirt work ever being done around the runway. I can't see any trace of any construction except the actual runway, from the air or on the ground. The only reference I can find of it during the war was that it was called "Rome Flight Strip" and was built as an emergency landing field for flight training crews. After the war it was declared surplus and given to the state of oregon. Across hiway 95 east of the airport is an FAA VOR station and what appears to be a gravel quarry that has been abandoned for a few decades, the only structure left there looks like 2 concrete walls several feet apart, possibly a loading dock. This quarry could be the source for the buildings at Basque. If anyone else can dig up anything more about this place, please let me know.Users browsing this forum: No registered users and 15 guests
