Rudder return springs, 55 180

Hey all, need help with correct part# for Rudder return springs,
55-180 serial#31525
One parts book says 0310196-5 LH, & -12 RH.
Another says 0310196-5 RH, & -6 LH.
A post on 180 club site says -5 LH & -2 RH ...I'm confused !

My parts book is down in my hangar about 40 minutes away. But I think you need to make sure your looking at the right serial number range in the parts book. Earlier serial numbers might have a different part number than later serial numbers (or something like that). Just my guess :-k

Hello Yankee,
I replaced a rudder spring but can't remeber which side it was. The part number on the bag for a 1955 C180 sn# 31312 was cessna part number 310196-12. I remember the first spring they sent was wrong. Hope this helps. Good luck installing it, I recall some poor language being one of the tools.

Thanks guys, I think (hope) I got the info . Appears the -12 & -5 #'s are correct, just the figure #'s flipped in parts book?

Re: Rudder return springs, 55 180

I've heard of guys who (try to) R&R the rudder return springs through the hole(s) in the belly. Don't know about the 180, but the 170 has a pair of access holes in the sides of the tunnel between the RH & LH rudder pedals right next to the return springs. Still a PITA job but much less cussing required than working through the belly.

As far as parts number go odd numbers on L/H side of center line of aircraft and even numbers on the R/H side --- That's just the way it is. 8)
