Ruined a new student pilot...

Last year about this time my business partner's son called me all excited and told me he had three lessons around Chicago in a 172 with a G1000. "For the love of all that is good!" I yelled into the phone "get away from that magenta-lined sorcery and come up here to AK, I will get you all sorts of flying". Well shoot, two days later he called saying he was on his way up, 'crap' I thought, now I actually have to comply with my bragging.

He was up for two weeks, arrived with four hours, and left with twenty some odd hours more than when he got here, 4 cross country in a float beaver (using only a sectional), 8 or so in a champ (the instructor said he could have soloed if he'd had his student license) 4 or 5 in a 172 on floats (that instructor said the same thing) and then some more time in a 206 on floats and a 205 (where he got to fly an hour or so actual with the CFII).

So I call him about a month ago to see how his training is going, he says "not so well". I asked why. He says "I have had three instructors and they just didn't seem to know how to fly without a glass screen, and they kept telling me to forget that wild west stuff and that their way was the best way to get his license, and, one kept his feet on the rudders the whole time, when asked why the instructor replied "I don't want you to kill me", so I fired each one of them".........

My work here is done. =D>

(Now I just need to get him back here to finish up)

Headoutdaplane,

It is mostly social expectation and compliance down here. Any kind of thinking is "thought crime." Your instructors up there obviously don't worry about the PTS until the student at least has some idea of how to fly. If you younger guys keep beating the bushes, you might get the establishment to move away from an instrument flight test as a PPL flight test. Pilots still need to learn to fly the aircraft by looking outside. In the old days, that was taught first. Now, they seem to think it is an after market add on.

I can't give him mountains, but I did do my private with Fox Flying Club in the western suburbs of Chicago and was even briefly on their board. I can recommend the organization and can hook him up with a couple CFIs there that will be more compatible.

Re: Ruined a new student pilot...

Great story. I feel his pain.

A similar thing happened with my training last week. I've been doing most of my training with one of the two available instructors but I decided to take a review lesson with the second guy.

During spin recovery review I counted 'one-two' to make sure the spin was well and properly initiated, then went to stomp on the opposing rudder. To my surprise and irritation, he was 1/2 second quicker and the rudder pedal was already going down as my foot touched it. I asked if he initiated the recovery and he said it was all me.

As if that wasn't enough, after landing I asked if we should use the same taxiway that we had used on the way out. He said yes and I was steering for that point when all of a sudden I felt brakes and steering and he took a closer taxiway without informing me of the change, or that he was taking the controls.

That was our last trip together.

Next time stomp the other pedal and hold the spin for an extra turn and see what he does...
That would drive me bonkers! Especially taking over and taxiing a different way without letting you know.
By the way I sent you a PM Allen.
