Sad Day Today, P2V Neptune Crashes near SLC
Debrief, share, and hopefully learn from the mistakes of others.
Just found about a P2V Neptune Firefighter that crashed not too far from the house. Apparently the plane was headed from Missoula, MT to Almargodor(sp?) NM. Its been a lousy, soupy, foggy day here in SLC and this is the only news that could make it worse. Clip has video as well.

Ok, I normally don't like to jump in and speculate like this, but clearly we can see from the video and pictures that the weather was a major contributor to this accident. But why on earth did these pilots continue to fly in this type of weather? I don't understand.
I know, I know, I was not at the accident site or inside the plane when this happened. But again, why did this have to happen?
I'll say I'm sorry in advance for jumping to conclusions or for being an idiot, but it tears me apart to hear accidents like this.
My deepest condolences to the families involved!!

While we don't have all the details, its fairly certain from many of the witnesses they interviewed that the Neptune was scud-running under the clouds. Some reported them "in-and-out of the clouds". They estimate the crash site to be 800ft. above the valley floor.
I'm with you Pat. These accidents seem to be avoidable and leaves one wondering.."so why not avoid this type of flying". Many reasons I suppose.

Neptune had a pretty good safety record until the last few years... too bad this happened.
