Salvation by air

I'm watching the CBS coverage of damage to highway infrastructure by Hurricane Irene in Vermont just after reading about the vindictive closure of back country strips in Idaho by the USFS prior to the passage of the Central Idaho Wilderness Act. Serious civil servants angst about their inability to protect populace cut off by washed out roads and highways. What the hell is wrong with these people? Are they so determined to deny access to the back country to aviators that they are willing to strand segements of populace by plowing up historical critical aviation access? It appears so.....sick!
