Scary Clouds?

These clouds look a little like thunder bumpers, but under them doesn't look bad. But a vertical column is supposed to caused by convection, right? So, would the flying under, near, or over them be hazardous? If I didn't already have a couple of beers down, I'd go find out.

Re: Scary Clouds?

I've flown right under big poofers coming out the top like that, expecting a good updraft, some cloudsuck, or some turbulence, and instead had a smooth ride. I'm curious too why that is. Columns prob have to be much taller and darkly evil to produce the dreaded effects.

Re: Scary Clouds?

I fly under clouds a lot taller than those..some give a nice vertical lift, some are up's and down's, some have no effect at all. I look for the big flat bottoms puffers, they usually have the most lift. What I am most careful of is the Virga coming off a line of low clouds..they can kick your butt!

Re: Scary Clouds?

whynotfly, that cloud is really dangerous, there are power lines running to it to charge up the lightning.

Okay, I'll kick myself off the forum for now.

Here is one of my favorites I took while flying. Wish I would have had a better camera.

Re: Scary Clouds?

Idea   . I'll have to start taking pics from the road. I've seen some pretty nasty shit while driving cross country.

This last summer I was rolling west bound on highway 56 west of Dodge City, Kansas and the clouds were looking very interesting  . Then it started to rain like hell and the clouds were getting nastier   . Luckly I past the storm without any damage but can see in my mirrors that I dodged a major bullet!! When I got down close to Liberal, I saw about a dozen storm chaser vehicles headed back east  . When you see those guys in the area, you know there's some major action happening close by!!! Typical mid west weather, It was a nice sun shiney day from Liberal, KS on down to Tucumcari, NM.

I am getting burned out on desert living, but the three things that never cease to amaze me about Arizona, are the sunrises, the sunsets, and the thunder bumpers that form almost daily during the monsoon season. Almost makes it all worth while

That's Big Ernie, "The smokejumper god. A deity with a rather twisted sense of humor, justice, and fair play. Determines good and bad deals for jumpers". Good to see he is still making the rounds.
