Sheep Mountain. Alaska. Good eats.

I have always wanted to stop by Sheep mountain lodge and have a burger. It's a short flight from Anchorage to the north. We have always heard mixed reviews on the service and food but with the current owners it was wonderful.
The strip is long and smooth enough to land with 8 or 700 tires. It is fairly narrow with weed brush growing on the sides. I am on 8.50 and had no issues. There were some ruts on the lodge end to be carful of.

A short walk through the biggest Volvo car collection and your there.

It's right on the road so they do get some road warriors. Not sure if they are open In The off season.

Food was good. The strawberry rhubarb pie was amazing!!!

There is a hiking trail system right off the strip that offers some pretty relax family hiking.

Some cool sand dunes off the matanuska river.

Nothing too crazy just a simple day trip.

I used to stop by there when working in the area in the late 70s - early 80s and the original ladies (former WWII nurses or teachers as I recall) were still running the place. Was a fantastic place then so good to see that it's still running.

Did a low pass in the Top Cub in April of last year when flying down the Matanuska for Anchorage. It still had a fair amount of stale/wet snow on it so we didn't stop. Good to know there's a cafe there if I ever get back.

Is that the one by Tahneta pass?? Been awhile since I've been in those parts, can't wait to go back.

I fly over it all the time on my way to the Wrangells -- later on today in fact, as well. Also eaten there on many occasions in years past, but not recently. Its spotty reputation is well deserved, but glad to hear their menu and service have improved.

My question is: why all the used Volvos??? It looks like a junk yard from the air. Luckily they are not visible from the road, but they sure stick out from the air. Looks like there must be over a hundred of them down there. Sure doesn't help the ambiance of the place -- unless perhaps you factor in a twisted mind.

Volvo collector is the adjacent property owner and not affiliated with the sheep mt lodge, which does indeed have great food and decent service.

Unfortunately you can say this about a lot of Alaska. Sad face.

Looks like Zach and Anjanette have just sold the place to new owners:

It's a great place to stop for a hot bowl of Chili after a hard day of snowmobiling (snowmachining for you natives) too!
