Sheridan, WY

I will be in Sheridan WY the third week in June for a work conference. Planning on flying the rans up and flying in the evenings. Any suggestions on where to play, interesting strips etc? Anyone nearby and want to fly in the evenings!

Just moved from Sheridan this last winter, or I'd be up for it. Not really much for grass strips in the area, and none that I know of in the Bighorn's.

Re: Sheridan, WY

I was there on business a few years ago. The Big Horns are fun to fly even if you don't land, lots of elk and open high mountain meadow areas. We ended up having to scud run around the South end of them getting home and then landed in Worland for fuel and scooby snacks. A maule swooped in in front of us on a mission, the ctaf was tied up telling his tale to the fbo and they met him at the fuel pumps with a bag of cow medicine. We weren't in any hurry, so we munched a bag of cheetos while we watched him and the fuel guy yuk it up for awhile while a Beech jet waited it's turn. Finally the old cowboy jumped in, not needing any fuel, just a rendezvous point, and gave it the onion back to the ranch. The Beech pilots acted a little stuffy over it, but it was amusing to me. Always thought farmers and ranchers were a little cooler than most people.

I used to overnight there regularly at my last job. I can't tell you much about the flying around there, but there is plenty to do in town.

The Mint is a cool old bar. Pony Bar used to have good looking girls serving decent food. Sanford's isn't bad for beer and a burger. Decent fly fishing not far from town. One of the big aircraft cover companies is or was headquartered on the airport there. Have fun, if you're from Denver, Sheridan has a bit of a boulder feel to it. It is the only place in Wyoming, besides Jackson, that I ever saw an obama sticker.

The scenery on the road past Sandturn is great...and often has hang gliding on the weekends. I used to spend a weekend or two hang gliding the Bighorns (and hitch hiking back to my car) when I was immortal back in the day. The downtown is nice.

Last time I flew into Sheridan was on an Angel Flight several years ago. It was a 90F day, and we arrived around lunch time, so I borrowed a "crew car". Now that was an experience. It was a Ford Granada with at least 2 million miles on it (only slight exaggeration). The power windows wouldn't work, nor would the A/C, so it was extremely hot inside. The drivers door wouldn't latch, so I had to hold it closed. The left rear wheel was bent badly, so that anything over 35 mph caused the back end to vibrate sideways. But it ran, and that's better than walking!

Courtesy car piles should be a fun thread on here. I'm bad at organizing my pictures, but somewhere I have a bunch including the Mary Kay pink caddy from Dubois, the exploding Pinto in Ronan, the three and a half wheeled van in Cutbank.....they all got me to town and back.

Re: Sheridan, WY

Thanks for the ideas! I am headed up next sunday and will tie my airplane down on the ramp. Will commute on my bike while there and plan on flying every evening. Gonna head out Thursday night and try to find a place to overnight since I need to be in Douglas the next morning before heading back to Colorado. If you see a little red airplane out there look me up.
