Short Flight to Tieton State in WA

Is there such a thing as 'Backish Country" flying? If so, the grass strips in Washington State that are maintained by WSDOT/Aviation would qualify. Unfortunately, most of these strips are closed Oct 1 - May 31, so time is running out to pay them a visit this year. Here's my video of flying in to 4S6 last week

Nicely done. Yep, time is running out.

I enjoyed that. Looks like the water level is getting low. I need to get up there and prowl around.

You say they close it on the first of October. How do they do that. Big X's, a D7 parked at each end. As a matter of fact I am coming north in a week and was planning on a visit to that strip

When it is closed they issue a NOTAM.

Trivia. Tieton, pronounced Tie it ton. Named after the Tieton River which means "Roaring water".

They could make it easier to find airport status, but this is the WADOT page. I suppose they expect people to abide by §91.103

They don't put X marks on the runway when it is closed, but they do remove the reflective cylinders marking the runway edge. Watch out for the huge elk pies all over the runway. Some are nicely dried, but lots are still squishy. I removed a bunch of FOD from the runway while I was there. A bunch of crap like trashed cigarette lighters, a bunch of big, hard rubber pieces and some broken glass. Hope it's still clean when you get there.

Go to the WS-DOT home page, click "aviation" (under "modes"),
then click "is your state airport open?".

You want something tough to find,
try figuring out if the Hood Canal floating bridge is open or closed.
