Re: Show us your HANGAR!

I'll be moving in soon! Brand new T-hangar that I'm going to rent. Fully insulated. I'm probably going to go ahead and get a propane heater hooked up before I move in too so it's ready to go for the winter. I can even paint in this one. Will be nice to have everything all in one place with room to finish up the Stinson.

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

Old Gray Fox is back home again. I have been sharing a T hangar at the airport for the past year and a half. My hangar mate was a college student and he graduated last quarter and moved back home. I thought about picking up the hangar lease myself but I would of had a hard time finding a new mate. It is a small T hangar so it takes just the right combination of high wing and low wing small airplanes to fit. I think I like having my plane at home where I can tinker on it anyhow. Its about 10 miles to the airport and takes about 20 minutes on each end of a flight to unload and load back up.

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

I am planning on building a hangar but I have questions:

1. How large of a hangar should I build? What is the cost with Post or Stick frame? What are the pros and cons? I have heard that if you go over a certain square footage, different building codes apply.

2. How high of an interior ceiling?

3. What type of door? Bifold, hydraulic, slider? What are the cost differences? What company?

4. How large of a door opening?

5. A recommended builder in Spokane county?

Thanks

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

Bigger is better....in doors, size and height. Go as big as your budget will permit. I doubt you'll ever regret having too big a hangar.

Try giving R and M Steel a shout....they're in the area...look at their web site. I know three friends who bought hangars from them, and all have good things to say about them.

Doors: If at ALL possible, stay away from sliding doors, particularly in country where you get freezing temps.....They suck no matter where they are.

Bi folds cost more, but they work. I've a lot of experience with five or six different makes, and, properly maintained they all work fine.

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

What Mike said, you don't want a sliding door. I have bi-fold and hydraulic, they both work, hydraulic will give more head space, slightly higher priced.

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

Morton buildings are fantastic! I had one with a bifold door, whole hangar insulated and heated. The Morton is very efficient, it held heat very well in the dead of a Michigan winter.

Radiant heat floors are fantastic. I suggest putting tubes in floor before its poured even if you are not planning on heating your hangar, if you decide to heat it the tubes are already installed! Kinda hard to put tubes in the floor if it is already poured. Mike is right, go as big as you can afford.

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

+1 on avoiding sliding doors if you can avoid it. My rental hangar with sliding doors is a real joy in January when the ice freezes up to the doors. I can only image how bad it must be in colder climates. One should not need a pick ax to get their airplane out of the hangar.

Re: Show us your HANGAR!

Another +1 on folding doors.

I've had three different sliding door hangars in Mexico, where it hasn't snowed in a few million years, and they still sucked.

Here's the very cool hangar door I've been occupying lately.

Coondog,

Niiiiiiice!

I loved my Morton at my previous airpark home. I live off airport now but am lucky since I have a nice rental "T" hangar 10 minutes from my house. That being said, I miss my Morton.

Yeah, I can't imagine what that door would cost today. It's getting to be close to 100 years old. Maybe 80? 85?

A conventional, garage style overhead door. Insulated of course.
