Several years ago I had a Stinson 108-3 on hydraulic wheel/skis. Based at Kingston Ontario on a paved, ploughed municipal airport. As this is in the heart of the lake district of eastern Ontario, many happy winter hours were spent visiting the hundreds of lakes within a hundred mile radius. The typical procedure was to land on lakes that had ice huts and vehicles on them, as the aircraft on skis was a much lighter ice load than a car or truck. One Sunday afternoon I landed beside an ice fisherman on The Bay of Quinte. After passing the time of day with him he casually asked which direction I was going to take off. I replied "straight ahead". OK was his reply, because the ice is good there, but is only three quarters of an inch thick 50 feet to your right. There is a God who watches fools.
