Skiplane flying in Idaho

Hello everyone. It has been sometime since I have been on here. I thought I would let everyone know that I have been on skis, and doing skiplane instruction this winter. I will soon have some great photos posted of some landings in places many of you are familiar with, and some others also. It is a great time to be in the backcountry. Very peaceful and quiet. Anyone interested in doing some skiplane training in my Cub, please contact me. We can also throw in some snowshoeing and a burger in Warren.

Is the restaurant open again in Warren? I stopped by there a couple of summers ago for breakfast, but it was closed and looked like it hadn't been open for a while. Thanks.

Skis for Tricycle gear

Has anyone heard or seen tricycle gear airplanes put on skis?

DEGJR,

Yes, there are a number of approvals of tricycle gear airplanes on skis. The Cessna 172 is approved on several types of straight skis. The Cessna 182 is as well. The 206 is approved on both Fli-Lite 4000 and FluiDyne 3600 Retractable wheel skis. There are doubtless a few others out there as well. I've seen a Cherokee Six on skis at least once. Don't know if it was field approved or STC'd.

The smaller Cessnas you need to be very careful with the nosegears, since they attach to the firewall. Bend one and you just bought a VERY expensive fix. That is simply technique, though.

The 206 on wheel skis isn't very practical, by the way, since it is restricted to 3350 pounds gross weight, compared to 3600 on wheels. They do perform well with a little weight in the far aft baggage, though.

Yes, Warren is up and running for their famous burgers. I was in there about 3 weeks ago. It is a popular destination for the sledders, and the couple of skiplanes around.
