I once

put some just puchased used straight Fererals with "New" bungees on my 180 Cessna.I took off ok, but as soon as I reached about 110 mph the plane started to gyrate and vibrate! The gauges all in the green I looked out to see the ski tips pointing down!! Now what? I pulled power way back and pulled full flaps, got her down to about 65 MPH and the bungees had just enough life to pull the tips back up! I landed and called the seller to tell him the news. It turns out the bungees although never mounted before had been stored 3 years in a shop where a lot of aircraft painting was done with the typical non existant ventilation system. Seems the fumes had rotted the bungees from the inside out! I mentioned I was not real happy and a fresh set were waiting the next morning at my plane. Woody

Patrol guy, great story; the Scoutabria ski incident got me to thinking about the time we mounted a snowplough on the Pawnee...

Zane, thanks for bumping this.

Ha, Good Stuff....

I wonder... if... a guy could bungie, or duck tape a couple of "flying Saucers" (those little discs we used to sit and ride on as kids) on the bottoms of our bushwheels, lock the brakes, and go skiing???
Naaa.. bad idea.. i think.... or .. is it? Yea, bad idea.. [-X
Wonder if ya can still buy em?

Re: Skis On A New Airplane

Ski limit cables and bungies should be checked regularily. See what can happen in this accident report...

My dad had a ski tip flop down on his C180 once. His solution was to do a steep stall at altitude and the ski flopped back into the proper position and stayed there at reduced airspeed.

Re: Skis On A New Airplane

Had a bad engine on a 206 one time, had to change it and by then there was better than a foot of snow when the new engine was ready to run!!
You know those little bitty plastic sleds, about 3' long. You can cut a 2x12 to fit in the bottom and a 2x4 cross ways to keep it from sliding off the tire. When you get going fast enough you raise the nose enough to loose the front sled and then you just fly off the ones on the mains.
Someone told me about this once!
