Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

Wasn't sure where to put this. Thought it was kinda cool and how every base to final should be (the real fun starts at 2:20) :D

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

Ha! I watched this just last night and debated whether to post, then I fell asleep. The comment section where it was posted was full of "that's so unsafe," and "he's flying on borrowed time" etc. Maybe, but that guy was no spring chicken either. Maybe it was LowflyinG3?

What am curious about is whether he was putting props into beta on that steep dive? I watched it with no sound.

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

Not the safest way to fly, but it doesn't get much more efficient that than that for a jump op.

Z, I doubt he went into beta in flight, probably just went idle with props full forward and let her drop near Vne.

Pretty steep turns close to the ground. If it works, it works. If it doesn't work, well--------.

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

What aircraft was that in the first one? Certainly one way to get 'er down!

And that PC-6 beta descent/approach looks pretty familiar. Gotta love the Porter's ability to fly with the prop in full beta. Only aircraft I know of that's certified to do that too 8)

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

I believe it's a turbine Dornier Do28. Probably in Europe. He's definitely gettin' after it. As long as he can do it with no more than 1.5+, no less than 0, and doesn't go over any door open VNE it's good. Not sure what all the low downwind with horizontal swoop to final is about, I always figured a jump plane should either be going up or coming down. He has a duck, I had dice.
Porter beta straight in is straight forward. Ya just don't wanna do that for all of um, hard on the tail and if ya take a look at how the tail is attached you won't push it.
Fun vids, sometimes I miss it. Thanks for the memories!

If you're not scarin' yourself, you're not scarin' the crowd!

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

The one thing that comes to mind about operating near Vne speeds going straight down would be that you may be over the Va speed in case you need to make an evasive maneuver because of traffic or another reason. Right?

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

Jump planes aren't making money if they aren't full of jumpers and climbing, so get 'er down!! That's the beauty of a turbine...(not that any turbine will ever have the class of a Twin Beech or 3..but they certainly do have their fine points!) I remember (and love) the days of recips and long rides down...turbines make WAY more trips in a day! Fun video!

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

A King Air pilot passed out doing the same BS. Aircraft Vne'd into the water. Total loss. Jumpers were OK.

My friend just signed off the engine change the day before and the FAA came down and took logs, names and telephone numbers real quick. Lucky the NTSB determined the cause. Hypoxia and Gs are a deadly combination.

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

He's got to use a twin turbine to have enough useful load for the jumpers and his cahones!

Maybe he is risky....but I'd say he's got some wickid skill too.

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

Seems every time one of these videos goes around... someone mentions what big balls the pilot has.
That and the video camera for the "look at me" ego boost.... and you have the perfect setup for Darwin to claim another one. Why do we revere these idiots. It isn't big balls... it's an out of proportion, very small brain.

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

Would've been neat to see his panel during that dive. What about shock cooling??

Looks to me like turboprops. Hard to shock cool, but don't know that airframe/engine? :?:

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

Is it wrong that I still consider this to be more sane than jumping out of said perfectly good airplane? 8)

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

No such thing as a perfectly good airplane.... VMC,IFR,Beta this Beta that. When the people get out , you get your ass back on the ground ,,asap. Some do it better than others. Without trying very hard it is very easy to beat the parachutes to the ground in the king air. In a Porter you had better be half way through your next coffee before the canopies land.In the pistons you should not beat them to the ground unless you own the airplane and have somewhere else really important to be to justify the abuse.Flying jumpers does not pay alot but it is one job that you can fly it like you stole it and be appreciated for it as long as it is done in a safe and effective manor.

Damn, dude...Sorry for the shallow comment. Just making light of a kinda cool video. I really have no idea the size of the pilot's brain or balls, and I hardly think that any of the comments here "revere" the guy or his flying technique. Sure, it is obvious that his odds are greater to end up as smoking hole with moves like that, but that is his choice. In the mean time, he is flying the heck out of the airplane.

Re: Skydive Plane: Get er down!!

Looks like he's just having a little fun. :D
Steep descent is no big deal until you are close to the ground.

Nanwalek approach (Base to Landing) is very similar with the exception of a mountain and a creek right at the end of the runway.
Also sometimes a wicked crosswind too. The guys out of homer go in and out lots of times a day.

There are bold pilots.
There are old pilots.
There are very few old bold pilots.
Almost every bold pilot I've known (including some very good friends) are dead!
Its not a matter of if, just when it will happen when you live on the edge.
