Slow flight

Slow flight stable 30 MPH IAS or less, groundspeed 43 MPH.

4,000 ft
No wind
Power 15 MP (which is what I use for short fields).
RPM full pitch
Full flaps
2 People
Half tanks
40 pounds in the extended baggage compartment.

Not bad for a 182.

Re: Slow flight

The MT prop made a big difference.
The Sportsmans STOL even more, the VGs more control at low speeds.
The combination its real good.

I cant imagine what adding wing extensions will do to this.
Its next on my list.

Cool. Thanks for sharing the numbers. The Sportsman STOL is on my short list.

Re: Slow flight

Im surprised Cessna doesnt come out of the factory with the Sportsman wing.
Probably it has been discussed before.

Definitely its a safer more fun plane to fly.
Shoudlnt be much more expensive to make.
They could advertise a 40 ,42 or even 45 kts gross weight stall speed.
Could advertise shorter landings, shorter take offs and overall safer airplane.

Cirrus has the parachute , Cessna has this special wing.
Even if you never use it for backcountry, it is better overall.

Re: Slow flight

That's pretty cool. So what speed can you pull it off the grass now?

Re: Slow flight

What difference did you notice or attribute to the MT prop? I'm curious because I acquired my 1964 182-G already "done" with IO550, MT prop, Sportsman STOL, and Wing-X wing extensions, so I had no baseline to compare.

Please tell me more about your AofA and how you integrate it into your approaches to land.

Just asking around I seemed to get the impression that the Sportsman STOL was giving me all I can get from that wing and the VG's wouldn't lower stall speed or make much difference. I did put them on little 150 taildragger I have that has a stock wing and they did seem to lower the stall speed on that. I would add them if I thought they would help me land short. If not, I'd rather not "clutter" the wing. They do make it harder to clean.

If I'm alone I keep two five gallon jugs of water in the Selkirk extended luggage section. Without them the plane won't do a power off stall and even with full aft trim, I need to be pulling pretty hard on final. With the rear ballast, I still need some back pressure, but much less and it will stall. Do you have similar CG challenges?

Thanks for the video and report.

Re: Slow flight

Nosedragger, I start with 10 degree flaps, at 40 mph I add 20 more and starts to fly.

Pierre the MT prop for landings feel like an airbrake, compared to my Hartzell helps a lot, you can come real high and not gain any speed in the descend, also I like the instant power, most likely because its 16 pounds lighter.

VGs Microaero claims reduction in the stall speed, even if it is not true the VGs under the elevator gives you more elevator authority at slow speeds, the ones on the wing more aileron at slow speeds, my plane feels very easy to manuver at 50 MPH, some strips has obstacles on final , I like how it behaves at slow speeds.

I do have the same CG challenges as you, I always keep 40 pounds in the extended baggage unles I have people on the back seats.

What is your power off stall speed mph IAS?
Im wondering with the wing extensions and Sportsman it has to be pretty slow.

Re: Slow flight

Here is a take off from a very wet grass strip, usually plane its flying by the windsock, not this day, but the larger tires sure makes it better.

Re: Slow flight

I dont know about 30... but with the VG's and sportsman, my wagon stalls right at 39mph w/ full fuel, 2 guys, 40 lb in the extended, and is comfortable and controllable right up until the break. When she stalls, it is just a very slight drop of a wingtip. Im still working on growing bigger balls on final, but currently Im short final over the trees at about 55 and landing comfortably in 300'-350' w/ no headwind and not slamming on the breaks. Wing-X is will be in a few weeks so we'll see how that changes things.

This was my best yesterday... (Me, 3/4 fuel, 40lbs in the ext baggage... 3kt direct X-wind.) Im pretty happy with how she is flying.

The space between the 40 and 50 MPH marks on the ASI is a fraction of an inch, so I don't know exactly. The stall horn starts to sound about 50 and the nose drops somewhere below that, maybe half way to the 40 mark.
