Smokey day at Copalis Beach

Smoke was horrible yesterday in the PNW.

Flew from S43 (Harvey) to S16 (Copalis Beach airport). Tops of smoke 7500-8000. Lateral 5 mile visibility. Not a great flying day but the beach was 64F and home was 91F (no AC at home).

1. Yes I can spell.

2. Yes I landed in the wet sand on purpose about 1 hr after high tide. If you look at furrow made by my tailwheel on back taxi you will note the sand was pretty soft not far from the wet areas.

Re: Smokey day at Copalis Beach

The smoke seems to be easing a bit yesterday (Friday).
Think I'll be heading up to Orcas for the fly-in this morning.
Airport cam shows a fair number of airplanes camped there as of 630am.
Hopefully smoke is better, kinda foggy-ish now so might be a lttle while before I can leave.

Great spot, nice video!

Enjoy the 5 mile vis, 1/2 mile at best north of the border here, the fire at Cache Creek is hitting 110,000 hectares, figures crossed for a hard rain! Until then I'll live vicariously through BCP.

It's worse here in BC today. I was going to Orcas today and Portland tonight, but I think I will leave it for next weekend.

Not fun flying for sure, I had to resort to following the highway to make it into Woss, and then the whole scan, scan, scan thing with G5 and iPad to make it back over from Gabriola to the mainland.

Rogue, you been to Bridge Glacier yet this year?

Nice, Tom. Video makes it seems not too terrible. I'm very ready to return to 10+ mile viz.

Here's what we've got in the Portland area. I was flying the Columbia river gorge during my flight review and this was about the viz. Definitely hugged my side of the river.

What kind of helmet/headset are you wearing? Smoke makes recent PNW flying very much "PVFR" (Pretend VFR). :(

As much as I'd like a nice Alpha Eagle, this Sport Link Detach is priced right and let's me keep my Zulus separate. I did buy a flip up lens for it.

I'd love to have a fully integrated helmet but I'm not ready to spend the money. I just blew $9000 on Lycon-ified cylinders. #-o
