Snow Play Video

I shared this on the Big Tire Pilot facebook page but figured I should post it on here as well.

A little fun on skis and tires on a snowy day on the California/Nevada border. Shot with the DJI Mavic Pro drone.

Looking forward to shooting more with this setup!

Re: Snow Play Video

Trent: you have bungees on that 'fox gear? I see your gear looking pretty splayed out, even after not side loading it for a bit while playing around. The reason I ask is my 1380 HD bungees seem to have lost their elasticity, in about 10 to 20 degree temps, and they are only about 9 months old. Oddly enough, when I using "regular" 1380's (not HD's), the problem was not near as bad. Turns out they make the 1380 HD's in a CW (cold weather) version, and my new pair will be on tomorrow.

Spruce doesn't offer them, Univair had them in stock. Pricey.....$184.00 via US Mail. I don't care, when my gear gets splayed out the retract system on my Datum skis doesn't like it. And BTW, GET SOME SKIS! You're going to keep having fun on snow with your tires, until you don't.

I'm actually running the TK1 shocks. Not sure why they were so splayed out in the snow like that. They do run a tad that way anyway and even more so when I pivot in a sharp turn. I'm guessing it's because I have a little toe out in the alignment of my gear so as I roll forward they spread. When I push it backward into my hangar my tires sit essentially straight vertical. I probably should shim my camber to fix it but I haven't gotten around to it.

And I know! I have been preaching that I don't need skis because it doesn't snow in Tahoe anymore but this year clearly has proved me wrong, so I'm considering going for some, they look like a blast!

Re: Snow Play Video

I have the RAGE gear system mod by John Roberts, which uses FOX airshocks to control the rebound while still using traditional bungees. I love it (and it's paid for) so if I can get it sucked up proper like with these CW bungees, I'll keep using it. Otherwise, I'll investigate the TH1 and possibly ACME shock strut route. The thing is, I want an immediate fix, right now, for this great winter snow flying season we are having, so hopefully this latest bungee change out (in an hour or so...) will solve this issue. Thanks for clearing that up.

As to the "getting of" the skis, I held off for years, and just quit flying during the winter, as I keep the plane at home and get a lot of snow, and didn't want to rent a winter hangar in town 25 miles away. Best decision I ever made! It is crazy how many places you can land when on the right ski, in the right conditions, it's one of those airplane things where you just have to suck it up and pay the price in equipment because it is sooo worth it. My log book no longer has a big several month gap in it.......now its happening year round :o
